J.A. Happ, St. Louis Cardinals, SP

Happ announced last week in an appearance on "The Heart Strong Podcast" with Jessica Lindberg that he has elected to retire from professional baseball. Happ is set to turn 40 in October and hadn't been linked to any teams upon becoming a free agent over the winter, so his decision to retire isn't an unexpected one. The crafty southpaw will bring an end to a 15-year career in the majors that included stops with the Phillies, Astros, Blue Jays, Pirates, Mariners, Yankees, Twins and Cardinals. He earned a World Series ring in 2008 with Philadelphia and made his lone All-Star appearance with the Yankees in 2018. He retires with a career 133-100 record and a lifetime 4.13 ERA over 1,893.2 innings. Happ (10-8) earned the win Thursday against the Brewers. He allowed three runs on nine hits and no walks while striking out seven across 6.1 innings. Happ gave up a solo home run to Luis Urias in the third inning, then found himself in trouble during the fourth frame after serving up four consecutive hits before recording an out, resulting in another pair of runs. It was the longest start for the left-hander in over a month and just his fourth time this season without issuing any free passes. Happ finishes off the 2021 regular season with a 5.79 ERA and 1.48 WHIP. Happ allowed two hits and four walks while striking out six in four scoreless innings during a no-decision in the first game of Friday's doubleheader versus the Cubs. The 38-year-old wasn't efficient, needing 74 pitches (43 ...

Ian Happ, Cubs clobber Pirates

June 14 - Ian Happ hit a three-run drive for his first homer in over a month and had four RBIs, while Jameson Taillon lasted a season-high six innings for his first home victory as the host Chicago Cubs rolled over the Pittsburgh Pirates 11-3 on a rainy Tuesday night. Happ erased a 1-0 Pittsburgh lead in the first inning with a shot into the right field seats off Luis L. Ortiz (1-3). It was the first homer since May 5 for Happ, who earned another RBI after being hit by a pitch from Yohan Ramirez with the bases loaded during Chicago's four-run seventh. Happ, however, appeared to injure his leg and left after the seventh inning. Meanwhile, Taillon (2-4), who entered 0-2 with an 8.27 ERA in four home starts, yielded a pair of solo homers to Jack Suwinski, plus one other run and six total hits during his longest outing of the season. The Cubs also got an eighth-inning, three-run homer from Christopher Morel as they won for the third time in four games. Ortiz was charged with four runs and also allowed six hits over 5 1/3 innings for the Pirates, who lead the National League Central but are 2-4 since winning six straight. Suwinski, a Chicago native, got the Pirates on the board in the first with a two-out homer into the right-center-field bleachers. It was his 14th homer of the season and his fourth in four games. However, the Cubs got that run back, and then some, in the bottom of the frame. Ortiz issued an inning-opening walk to Mike Tauchman (two hits) and an infield single ...

Happ's homer, 4 RBIs lead Cubs over Pirates 11

CHICAGO (AP) — Ian Happ hit a three-run, first-inning drive for his first home run since May 5, Christopher Morel added a three-run homer in the eighth and the Chicago Cubs routed the Pittsburgh Pirates 11-3 on Tuesday night. Happ had four RBIs and scored three runs for the Cubs, who outhit the Pirates 14-7. “I thought we swung the bats well,” manager David Ross said. "Obviously the Morel homer there toward the end was a big exclamation point. “Up and down the lineup, we had some really hard-hit balls. I though we could have put the game out of reach even a little earlier.” Jack Suwinski had a pair of solo homers for the Pirates, who have lost four of six after a six-game winning streak. He connected in the first off Jameson Taillon (2-4) and his 425-foot drive to right in the sixth tied the score 3-3, disappearing into the mist and landing on Sheffield Avenue. Suwinski has four homers in his last four games and a team-high 15. He's hit five home runs in 12 games against the Cubs. “Just being out there and facing more guys and getting that under my belt makes me feel a little better,” said Suwinski, a Chicago native in his second major league season. “When I’m feeling good and able to see the ball and be quiet in the box, just do what I’m trying to do, I’m able to do less and be able to execute a little bit better." Pittsburgh is 14-23 following a 20-8 start. In a game that started 1 hour, 10 minutes late because of rain, Matt Mervis broke a 3-all tie in the sixth with an ...
