New year brings with it popular harvest festivals and Makar Sankranti is one of the most popular harvest festivals in our country. It is widely celebrated across the country but especially in the states of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Madhya Pradesh. Usually Makar Sankranti falls on 14 January every year, however, this year, the harvest festival will be celebrated on 15 January. This is due to the sun’s transition which will start late in the night on Saturday. It is said that during the festival, the mighty sun starts its Northward movement, going into Makar (Capricorn) rashi. This transition period is called Uttarayan. It is also seen as a time when we bid farewell to the harsh cold weather to welcome warmer days. However, going by the weather conditions, we can hardly say that this year we will be bidding adieu to the cold as harsher temperatures are expected. We have seen this change over the years when Northern states see a delayed winter and thus a delayed spring time too. The festival also falls together with other festivals across the country, such as Lohri in Punjab and Maghi in Haryana. Rajasthan and Gujarat will celebrate Uttarayan, Tamil Nadu will celebrate Pongal and people of Assam will ring in Bihu.
