New Delhi: The Punjab Vigilance Bureau and the Chandigarh Police find themselves entangled in a controversy after the death of Kartik Popli, son of arrested IAS officer Sanjay Popli. The 27-year-old died from a bullet wound Saturday during a search of the Popli residence. The police have called it a suicide while the family has alleged murder and accused the cops of ‘torturing’ their son. On 20 June, Sanjay Popli, a 2008 batch IAS officer, was arrested on charges of corruption during his time as the CEO of the Punjab Water Supply and Sewerage Board. He was transferred as Director of Pensions in May. Sanjay Popli had been brought by the vigilance bureau to his residence for the search Saturday. Speaking to the media in the evening after the incident, Sanjay Popli, on his way out of the hospital where he was taken for a medical check-up, “They tortured my child and killed him,” alleged Shree Popli, Kartik’s mother while “First Sanjay was implicated in a false case and now they have shot my son…. I saw vigilance officials pointing a gun at Kartik’s temple. They had taken him upstairs to his room. They pushed me from the stairs and I heard a gunshot. Sanjay was on the ground floor. Our phones were taken away and I saw that he was being tortured and humiliated by the vigilance officials,” she added. While Kartik’s mother, Shree Popli, cried foul, police claimed he shot himself in the head on the first floor of the house with his father’s licensed 7.62 mm pistol. The police said they had to break into Kartik’s room, before they rushed him to Government Multi-Specialty Hospital, Sector 16, where he was declared brought dead. A law graduate from Panjab University, Kartik was a member of the Bar Council and preparing for the judiciary exam. He had left the house in the morning and returned with the vigilance team that had brought Sanjay for more recoveries. “Kartik shot himself with a licensed weapon. Initial probe shows that he committed suicide,” said Kuldeep Singh Chahal, senior superintendent of police (SSP), Chandigarh. His father performed the last rites amid police presence. Earlier today, Kartik's post-mortem examination was conducted at the PGI by a panel of three doctors. While the police claim that Kartik shot himself from a licenced pistol of his father, his family alleged that a vigilance team conducting a search at their house in Sector 11, Chandigarh, had killed him on Saturday. A Vigilance Bureau spokesperson said they had recovered over 12 kg of gold, 3 kg of silver, five high-end mobile phones, two smart watches from the storeroom of Popli's house in Chandigarh. The recovery included nine gold bricks, each weighing 1 kg, 49 gold biscuits, 12 gold coins and three silver bricks weighing 1 kg each, said the spokeperson. Sources said Kartik graduated in law from OP Jindal Global University, Sonepat, in 2019 and was preparing for the judicial services examination. He allegedly shot himself with his father’s pistol on the first floor of the house. The sources said Kartik was disturbed after his father’s arrest on corruption charges. He used to meet his father while he was in Vigilance custody. He met his father today also and returned home a few minutes before the Vigilance sleuths arrived there.
