Opinion: What PM's Har Ghar Tiranga Campaign Should Alert Us To

On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of India's Independence, millions of households will unfurl the tricolour and salute the numerous martyrs, women and men, who made our freedom possible. For Har Ghar Tiranga to go beyond a slogan or a ritual, it is important to remind ourselves of our own history and what was critical in winning us our independence. The Tiranga is closely linked to the Constitution of India. It was the Constituent Assembly (CA) which set up a 12-member ad hoc committee in June 1947 to decide on the national flag. Named the "Flag Committee", it was headed by Rajendra Prashad, President, and its members were Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, Sarojini Naidu, C Rajagopalachari, K M Munshi, KM Pannikar, Frank Anthony, Pattabhi Sitaramayya, Hiralal Shastry, Baldev Singh, Satyanarayan Sinha and SN Gupta. It was a given that the members of this committee would propose the adoption of the tricolour as the national flag though with an important modification of replacing the charkha with the Ashoka Chakra. Even though the tricolour was first adopted by the Congress party in its resolution of 1931, in practice, it went beyond the Congress party and became the main banner held by Indians in their battle for freedom. Lucknow, Aug 9 (PTI) Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday said Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'Har Ghar Tiranga' slogan has now become a mass movement. Adityanath launched an awareness rally at a programme organised here with an aim to ensure public participation in the 'Har Ghar Tiranga' campaign organized as part of 'Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav' from August 9 to August 15, said a statement issued from the Bharatiya Janata Party. Flagging off the rally, Yogi called upon the people to participate with enthusiasm in the campaign, and said Prime Minister Modi's 'Har Ghar Tiranga' slogan has now become a mass movement, the statement said. With the start of the campaign, party office bearers, public representatives, and workers came out on the streets for the 'Tiranga yatras' in all the 1918 mandals (block level unit of the organization) of the state with the people for creating public awareness. Along with this, workers will also come out for the cleanliness campaign at the statue sites of freedom movement leaders on August 11 and 12, and for "Har Ghar Tiranga' campaign at every house on August 13, 14 and 15. The 'Har Ghar Tiranga' campaign held between August 2-15, as a part of the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, was launched with the aim of mobilising over 20 crore households and more than 100 crore Indians to celebrate the nationalistic spirit. Commemorating the 75 years of Indian Independence, the Prime Minister urged people to hoist the Tiranga (national flag) at their homes. A Call For Patriotism As per the official statement published on the website of "Bringing the flag home collectively as a nation in the 75th year of independence thus becomes symbolic of not only an act of personal connection to the Tiranga but also an embodiment of our commitment to nation-building."
