Kalakshetra Sexual Harassment Case: Hari Padman's Wife Files Counter Complaint

Divya Hari Padman, wife of Hari Padman who has been accused in Kalakshetra sexual harassment case, lodged a complaint with Chennai police commissioner Shankar Jiwal on Wednesday. Divya Hari Padman in her complaint alleged that her husband was arrested in a 'false complaint' and sought an inquiry into the matter. Divya is also an employee of the Kalakshetra Foundation . In her complaint on Wednesday, Divya alleged that it was a false complaint. She said that the aluma gave the complaint after the instigation of two teachers. Divya said that the teachers--Nirmala Nagarajan and Nandhini Nagarajan--were jealous since Hari Padman received praises from former principal Janardhanan, a report on The Hindu said. As a result, Divya alleged that the lecturers used the survivor to make her lodge a false complaint. She also said that survivor was against her husband since once Hari Padman reprimanded the survivor for her 'inglorious activities’ following which she developed ‘annoyance’ against Hari Padman. Divya said that the suvivor took part in the birthday celebration of her daughter on September 15, 2019. Hari Padman, a dance professor at Kalakshetra Foundation’s Rukmini Devi College of Fine Arts, accused of sexual harassment, was arrested on Monday, 3 April. The institute's director Revathi was interrogated by Tamil Nadu State Commission for Women chairperson AS Kumari, Sun News reported. In March this year, several allegations of sexual harassment were levelled against four faculty members of the RDCFA, namely Hari Padman, Sanjith Lal, Sai Krishnan, and Sreenath. However, legal action has been taken only against Hari Padman, based on a complaint filed by an alumnus. He has been booked under Sections 354A (sexual harassment) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code, and Section 4 (penalty for harassment of woman) of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act. Chennai: Days after student protests rocked South India's premier dance school, the Chennai police have arrested an assistant professor of the Kalakshetra Foundation who is accused of sexually abusing his students. The accused, Hari Padman, hailing from Kerala has been absconding since he returned to Chennai from a study tour to Hyderabad. Reportedly he was arrested from a house in the city's Madhavaram area in the wee hours of Monday. She alleged that Hari Padman used to send her obscene messages and had physically abused her while she was studying at the institute. The survivor further claimed that she discontinued her studies following his physical abuse. Students of the institute had sent a letter to the Secretary of the Union Ministry of Culture, complaining that current and former students of the institute had faced verbal and physical abuse in the institution. Repertory artists of the institute Sanjit Lal, Sai Krishnan and Sreenath have also been booked in the case. The students have formed a union with Jisma K K as president and Shakthi Shivani as secretary. Kalakshestra Prof Hari Padman arrested over sexual harassment complaint in Chennai

Notably, a complaint was filed by a student in the Adyar Police station after which the police arrested Prof Hari Padman. On April 1, he reached his friend’s house in North Chennai from Hyderabad, where he was nabbed by the police. Earlier his name was also mentioned as an accused in the letter written to the Union Culture Ministry by a student union of the girls' college of the Kalakshetra Foundation. Student union’s complaint to the Culture Ministry The students of the Rukmini Devi College of Fine Arts of the Kalakshetra Foundation located in Tamil Nadu’s Chennai had shot a letter to the Ministry of Culture demanding action against the Director and the Head of the Dance department of the institution. The letter informed about the formation of the student union on March 30 with Jisma KK and Sakthi Shivani appointed as President and Secretary respectively. The recognition of the union was also demanded by the student body. “We write to you as this institution is under your Ministry's direct management. These incidents pertain to instances of decades of sexual abuse and allegations by current and former students. These instances involve several serving male teachers at the institution, one of whom has been here for close to two decades", reads the letter. Kalakshetra professor booked for sexual harassment after protests on campus

By Pramod Madhav: The Tamil Nadu Police on Friday booked Kalakshetra assistant professor Hari Padman, days after students of the Rukmini Devi College of Fine Arts accused him of sexual harassment. This comes Hari Padman, who was accused of sexual harassment, was booked under Sections 354A (sexual harassment), 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC. He was also booked under relevant Sections of the Women Harassment Act. A day before, on Thursday, a prayer meeting was boycotted by Kalakshetra students in an attempt to register their protest against the institute’s inaction despite several allegations against Hari Padman. The students demanded the suspension of the alleged harassers and a safe campus atmosphere to share their experiences without fear. Following protests, it was decided that college would remain closed till April 6. The college administration also asked all students to vacate hostel with immediate effect.
