Maharashtra: Anil Deshmukh steps down, Dilip Walse Patil to be new home minister

• • • Maharashtra: Anil Deshmukh steps down, Dilip Walse Patil to be new home minister Maharashtra: Anil Deshmukh steps down, Dilip Walse Patil to be new home minister This came hours after the Bombay High Court directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to carry out a “preliminary enquiry” into the allegations against him. Explained NCP shy but HC forced its hand The Shiv Sena and Congress were eager to see Deshmukh go. But the NCP dug its heels in, opting for a probe by a retired judge. The HC’s order clearing a CBI probe forced the NCP’s hand. It also gave the party the justification to get Deshmukh out — and avoid further embarrassment. Three days after he was removed as Singh subsequently filed a PIL seeking a CBI probe against Deshmukh for these alleged malpractices. Two other PILs and a criminal writ petition were also filed on the same matter seeking a probe against both Deshmukh and Parambir Singh. One of the PILs was by lawyer Ghanshyam Das; another by a chartered accountant and teacher Mohan Prabhakar Bhide. An intervention application was also filed by one Vinod Kumar Dubey, alleging Singh was in “collusion” with the The Express Explained Telegram Channel While the overall order addressed issues raised in all these petitions, that for a CBI preliminary enquiry was based on the writ petition of lawyer Jaishri Laxmanrao Patil, who demanded an independent probe into the allegations and directions to the Mumbai Police to take cognizance of her complaint of ...

After 26/11, R R Patil returns as Home Minister

Mumbai: "Only a few people died, it could have been worse." That was how RR Patil, Home Minister of Maharashtra, described 26/11. The attacks, and his careless statement, cost him his job. But he's back now as Home Minister, provoking strong reactions. "Here's a man who they removed from his post for his failures of 26/11, but now they are reinstating him," says Nitin Gadkari, Maharashtra BJP Chief, echoing the opinion of many in the Opposition. Until 26/11, Patil, a senior leader of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), had a better reputation as a Home Minister than his predecessor, Chaggan Bhujbal, now the deputy chief minister of the new government. So there was little to choose from, say analysts. "What is the option? Here was a man who has a reasonably clean image and reputation. Also besides him, the others are non-performers," laments activist Gerson D'Cunha. Patil promises a good run this time around. "My party has shown faith in me. I will work to the best of my abilities. I'm grateful for this," he says

Shinde vs Fadnavis: How an ad war has Maharashtra ruling combine abuzz

The people of Maharashtra, on June 13, woke up to front-page advertisements in vernacular newspapers claiming that chief minister Eknath Shinde had public approval ratings of 26.1 per cent while his deputy Devendra Fadnavis had of 23.2 per cent, thus alluding to the former being more popular. What raised eyebrows further was that the full-page advertisement claimed that the ratings were based on a survey but did not mention any details of this purported exercise. It also did not carry a photograph of Fadnavis. It only featured Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Shinde with the tagline: ‘Rashtramadhye Modi, Maharashtramadhye Shinde’ (Modi at the national level, Shinde in Maharashtra). It thus implied that Shinde was in contention for another shot at chief ministership after the assembly election next year. The same afternoon, Fadnavis cancelled his plans to attend a government event in Kolhapur with Shinde. While he was speculated to be upset about the advertisement, education minister Deepak Kesarkar, who belongs to the Shinde-led Shiv Sena, said Fadnavis had suffered an ear problem and was advised by doctors against air travel as this could aggravate it. After an uproar, a fresh advertisement was issued the next day in an apparent attempt at damage control. This time, it carried photographs of Modi, Union home minister Amit Shah, late Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray, Shinde’s mentor Anand Dighe and the Shinde-Fadnavis duo with the tagline, ‘Janatechya Charani Matha, Garja M...

Modi for India, Shinde for Maharashtra ad controversy: Here's what happened

An advertisement that claimed that The advertisement did not have photo of Devendra Fadnavis 'The dream team loved by all' advertisement The advertisement had a photo of Eknath Shinde and PM Modi. In the advertisement, given by Shiv Sena with the bow and the arrow symbol, PM Modi-Eknath Shinde was termed as the 'dream team' loved by all. "The commendable teamwork of Honourable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and chief minister Eknath Shinde has secured the highest position in Maharashtra through their recent welfare projects..." it said. 'Sena advertisement but no mention of Balasaheb Thackeray' The full-page advertisement was given by the Shinde- Sena. Uddhav Sena MP Sanjay Raut pointed out that there was no mention of Balasaheb Thackeray. “It was Balasaheb's (Bal Thackeray's) Shiv Sena earlier, but the advertisement has cleared the air. It has now become Modi-Shah's Shiv Sena. Where is the image of the late Balasaheb Thackeray?" Sanjay Raut said. ‘Both of us given positive ratings’ Eknath Shinde played down the Shinde versus Fadnavis war that the advertisement projected and said both of them received positive ratings. " "I and the Deputy CM have been given positive ratings. The two of us are leading the state and taking it forward. I and the Deputy CM are carrying out overall development taking the cabinet along. We are in people's minds and that is important," Shinde said. Fadnavis cancels event with Shinde Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday cancelled an event at Kohlapur w...
