Tarkasura's fight with Ganesha, Kartikeya and Vishnu

Tarkasura got a boon from Brahma that only Shiva's son could kill him. It is said that Tarkasura defeated Vishnu in that fight. How can Vishnu get defeated? He is the Supreme Being and everything revolves round him. So how can he be defeated? Everyone is an ANSH of Vishnu. So Vishnu should be able to control his own ANSH. Isn't it? Lord Vishnu cannot be defeated. But, Brahma has given a boon. So, vishnu will not kill. So, when vishnu moves away from battle field to respect brahma's word, foolish people think that they have won. Moreover, when did Tarakasura fight against Vishnu? Can you please provide reference from any purana? Also it is Tarakasura and not Tadakasura. May be you can correct that. Lord Vishnu does get defeated sometimes on purpose in order to maintain the sanctity of the boons given by the other two gods of the Trinity. Even in the Daksha Yagna he accepted defeat from Veerbhadra's hands voluntarily. As per the At last, discovering that it was impossible to subdue Veerabhadra by any ordinary methods, Janardhana decided to take his life once and for all by using his invincible Discus-Sudrasana-feared in all the worlds for its efficacy. So, twirling it around his right index finger, he let loose the mighty Sudarsana and it roared into the intervening space with such tremendous momentum and acceleration that it flew cleaving the air with incandescent jets of flame spouting off tangentially from its thousand revolving teeth. Seeing Vishnu's Discus approaching h...

One of the soldiers informed Indra about this. Therefore, Indra sent other gods to look into the matter. The gods attacked Charpatinath, but he defeated them as well. Indra understood that he couldn’t defeat Charpatinath. Therefore, he went to Lord Shiva and asked for help. Lord Shiva and his ganas came to the scene and attacked Charpatinath, but the yogi used “Vatakarshana Vidya” against them, which stopped their breathing and made them unconscious. Afterward, Charpatinath defeated Lord Vishnu as well. When Pippalayan came to know about this, he intervened and rescued Lord Shiva and the other gods. He was no match for Lord Krishna, so he requested Lord Shiva to protect him. A fierce war began between Lord Krishna and Lord Shiva, which lasted for many days. As both were equally powerful, there was no end to it. Therefore, Lord Krishna told Lord Shiva that he would not be able to protect dharma if Lord Shiva supports Banasura. Hence, Lord Shiva told Lord Krishna to use Jurumnastra, which put him in a deep sleep for some time. Then Lord Krishna cut off a thousand arms of Banasura, and he accepted his defeat. mahabharata

I have read that as per Mahabharata (Anushashana parva) where upamanyu says that - there was no deity like Shiva , there was no refuge like Shiva. There is no one who can give so many boons like him & no one was equal to him in battle. But recently I came across that sabha parva of Mahabharata mentions that Lord Krishna had defeated Lord Shiva when he had taken the side of Banasur. So,these two statements are confusing or how it can be possible? Please clear my doubt. There is no precious superlative degree (like "no one was equal to him in battle") in practical.it's true for some point of time but not for always.if someone defeated all at sometime then he is best (no one was equal to him in battle) but that doesn't mean it can't be reverse another time.Shiva defeated Vishnu when Vishnu participated (due to boon/promise) from Daksha side.and Krishna defeated Shiva when Shiva (due to boon/promise) participated from Baansura side.Due to their promise/boon they participated from wrong side hence were defeated... This is a hard question to answer factually. However thankfully there are some passages from The Puranas and The Mahabharata that can be used to answer this. First let me answer this based on the passages from the Puranas and The Mahabharata. Then I will add my personal opinion. In Puranas that glorify Vishnu, the implied answer to this question is simple - which is, that Lord Vishnu is superior. So naturally in a duel, he prevailed. But in The Shiva Maha Purana, in R...

Lord Shiva is established as the greatest in the Shiva Purana. Lord Vishnu is designated as the greatest in the Vishnu Purana. There has always been a conflict over who can defeat whom. Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu are equally strong; if they battle, the cosmos created by Lord Brahma will be destroyed entirely. Hinduism’s principal gods are Vishnu, Shiva, and Brahma. Many Hindus consider Brahma the Creator of the universe, Vishnu Preserver it, and Shiva or Maheshwar is known as the Destroyer. According to several holy books and Puranas, Shiva and Vishnu, the two members of Hinduism’s blessed Trinity, have a particular link of love, devotion, and adoration for one another. There are rare instances in which both gods battled for the greater good. Shiva on the left, and Vishnu on the right. The Superiority Contradiction Vishnu and Shiva are regarded as the highest gods in Hinduism as part of Trimurti, a group of three gods (Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva). They also signify the cyclical aspect of human existence, from conception to demise, and the cycle continues indefinitely. However, Hindus have long been divided regarding which of these three gods is greatest, notably between Vishnu and Shiva, who are both ul...
