Volleyball Positions and the Number of Players

In the late 19th century, the two popular American team sports of basketball and volleyball were both invented at Springfield College in Massachusetts. Volleyball was initially designed to be a less-strenuous sport for older people, although volleyball has evolved into a hard-hitting, competitive men's and women's sport in the NCAA, the Summer Olympics and a number of other international competitions. Number of Volleyball Players A volleyball team has six players. Competitive volleyball is traditionally divided into men's teams and women's teams, though recreational play can be coed. Two teams stand on opposite sides of a net in a volleyball court. Although the rules are extensive, the basic idea is a back-and-forth of the ball over the net, trying to keep it off the ground. Basic play consists of one team beginning a rally by serving the ball, which means tossing it in the air and hitting it with the palm or arm over the net. Then players hit the ball back and forth over the net, trying to score a point by grounding the ball on the opponent's court. Each team has three touches on its side during a rally. Volleyball Rotational Positions The six players stand in two rows facing the net in what are known as their rotational positions. The three players in the front row form the attack zone, and the three players in the back row form the defense zone. The back player on the left is called the server. She begins the rally to score a point. Volleyball Rotation After a team side...

Volleyball rules: Know all regulations, the court size and players needed

An engrossing and high-energy sport, volleyball has been an ever-present discipline at the Olympic Games since its debut at Tokyo 1964. While the Soviet Union emerged as a force to be reckoned with in volleyball in the early Olympic years, Brazil, Cuba and China have grown in stature in recent times. Want to know more about basic volleyball rules and regulations at the Olympics? Here is a brief tell-all: Volleyball rules The number of players in volleyball is six on each side, with the teams separated by a net in the middle. The team that wins the pre-game coin toss gets the opportunity to serve the ball first. The aim of the server is to hit the ball over the net from behind the baseline over to the opposition’s team half to start a rally. Teams are allowed a maximum of three consecutive touches after which they have to send the ball into the opposition’s half. The player that receives the serve, attempts to control the ball and loop it in the direction of one of their team-mates. This is known as the ‘pass’ or the ‘bump set’ which is executed with the forearms. The player that gets the second touch is usually the ‘setter’, who loops the ball up as close to the edge of the net as possible setting up a smash, known as a ‘spike’ in volleyball. The opposition team attempts to block the ball by often positioning their tallest and most athletic players close to the net and the rally continues until one of the teams commits a fault or if the ball hits the ground.
