Things We Do Not Tell the People We Love by Huma Qureshi review

F our of the 10 short stories in This makes sense because holidays, whether with partners, children or extended family, can be flashpoints for conflict and realisation. When Simon wanders off with his parents, leaving Tasneem browsing at a market stall, she searches for them, alarmed, until she finally spots their golden heads, happily seated at a cafe and absorbed in conversation without her. Qureshi acutely observes how “she felt it then. Their sets of pale grey eyes upon her, innocent and uncomprehending small moons. There it was, the space wide between them. Simon and his parents on one side, and then her on the other.” Qureshi’s plots unfurl purposefully, sometimes to reveal a sting in the tale On holiday, we betray otherwise carefully concealed anxieties. Perhaps it is the fatigue of travel that sparks irritability, or the discombobulation of new places that somehow more sharply illuminates faults that are usually overlooked. Whatever the case, it’s also true that short story collections, when the tales are neat and portable like Qureshi’s, are good company on travels. Things We Do Not Tell the People We Love feels like an excellent holiday book – making it a slightly odd release for autumn. Still, these are well told stories with well realised characters. Qureshi’s plots unfurl purposefully, sometimes to reveal a sting in the tale. Her concerns are domestic – first love, friendship, estranged mothers, discontented wives, families that fall apart, marriages that limp...

Destined for an arranged marriage, I chose to follow my heart

Photograph: Jenny Smith/The Observer ‘We need everyday love stories that include everyone’: Huma Qureshi with her husband Richard and their three children. Photograph: Jenny Smith/The Observer T his year, my husband Richard and I will have been married for 10 years. It may not sound all that long, but it feels quietly significant to me, this decade of us, not least because there was a time that I could not fathom a world in which we could ever be together at all. I grew up expecting to marry someone my parents chose for me: a suitable young man who would share my Pakistani family background, my cultural heritage and faith. I can’t remember how old I was when I understood this – only that I did, without it needing to be explained. It was what my cousins did and the daughters of our family friends did. It was the way things were. Still, though I knew it was expected of me, I began to long for more than a match made by my parents. I was a wistful teenager. Boyfriends were firmly not allowed, but I spent a lot of time pining, perhaps more for something than someone. I read Jane Austen obsessively, always a little disappointed that Marianne didn’t get to be with Willoughby. I mourned Joey’s unrequited love in Dawson’s Creek with great heartache on her behalf, though I knew the object of her affection was unworthy. More than anything, I wanted to know what love ...

How We Met by Huma Qureshi review

H uma Qureshi confesses early on in How We Met that she wasn’t sure about whether or not she should have written this memoir. It’s the story of how she found and later married a white Englishman called Richard. It is, she worries, “unextraordinary and normal and therefore an unimportant story to tell”. Self-chiding she may be, but her anxiety is not entirely misplaced: at a time when public discussion about race and culture is often shrill and self-righteous, at once accusatory and defensive, full of ologies and phobias, the quiet tone of her book – to say nothing of its guarded optimism – is almost shocking. “Perhaps my story isn’t quite as dramatic as you’d hoped it would be,” Qureshi ponders. “Maybe you were expecting a story of oppression, repression, my personal trauma neatly spilled to fit a familiar-feeling narrative.” Her father was from Lahore, her mother from Uganda; both were graduates, and she grew up in Walsall, where even the most eventful weekend involved nothing more than relatives descending on their house, “cars parked up the road for miles occasionally annoying the white neighbours because of someone’s Mercedes half-blocking a pavement or a drive, the air thick with the smell of kebabs and biryani”. Qureshi studied at Warwick and then in Paris, but returned home suddenly after her father had a stroke. She finds him unable to speak and tends to him for days and weeks (he eventually died after 18 months in hospital). Thinking of ways in which she can honou...
