'People want Shinde over Fadnavis as CM’ — BJP ally Shiv Sena flexes muscle with front

Mumbai: Amid friction between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena — especially over the latter’s home turf of Thane — the Shinde-led party Tuesday placed a full front-page advertisement in several newspapers claiming more people wanted to see Shinde as chief minister than the BJP’s Devendra Fadnavis. The advertisement, which had “Modi for India, Shinde for Maharashtra” written in bold letters, also declared Prime Minister Narendra Modi and CM Shinde to be the “dream team loved by all.” Citing a Zee News– Matrize survey, the results of which were released Monday, the ad said 26.1 percent of the people of Maharashtra wanted to see Shinde as the CM, while 23.2 percent wanted Fadnavis. Moreover the advertisement also cited the survey to assert that 30.2 percent of Maharashtra residents preferred the BJP, while 16.2 percent preferred the Shinde-led Shiv Sena. “These numbers show that a total of 46.4 percent people of Maharashtra trust the BJP and Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena alliance for the development of the state,” the ad said. The advertisement comes at a time when there have been conflicts between the cadres of the two parties of Maharashtra’s ruling coalition, particularly in Shinde’s stronghold of Thane and his MP son Shrikant Shinde’s constituency of Kalyan. The coalition government formed by an alliance between the Shinde-led Shiv Sena and the BJP will complete a year on 30 June. In the 2014 and 2019 state as...

Eknath Shinde: BJP MLA Sanjay Kelkar stakes claim to CM Eknath Shinde Shiv Sena's Thane

THANE: The dispute between the governing The statement, which could widen the local differences between the allies at the state and national level, was made at a BJP conclave with senior BJP leaders and cabinet ministers in attendance in CM Eknath Shinde's city of Thane. Taking a dig at Shinde and his son, Lok Sabha MP from Kalyan Shrikant Shinde, Kelkar said, "Many from our district, including our allies, have won since 2014 because of the BJP wave. There is no one other than BJP who can get elected here due to our immense groundwork. Not just Thane and Kalyan, but the entire district and Palghar have belonged to us (BJP) since the era of Rambhau Mhalgi and Ram Kapse. I'm surprised when people (Sena) start claiming their authority over seats in Thane. They seem to be nursing a misconception that they are the ones working to re-elect PM Modi but fail to realise that it has been BJP workers who have been taking the (Modi government's) initiatives to the people." Meanwhile, even as BJP leaders who were present at the event did not clarify or downplay the statement later, political observers said it could be interpreted as the party's tacit support to the approach of reclaiming Thane from the ally. Sena, on the other hand, was quick to hit back, claiming they didn't pay heed to what Kelkar said. "What is more important is that leaders like CM Shinde and deputy CM Fadnavis are together, and the alliance has also been also cemented by BJP state president Chandrakant Bawankule. ...

Ahead of floor test, one more Sena MLA joins Shinde faction; tally rises to 40

Ahead of the floor test of the Eknath Shinde-led Maharashtra government on Monday, one more Shiv Sena MLA from the Uddhav Thackeray camp joined CM Shinde’s faction, taking its tally to 40. The Shiv Sena currently has 55 MLAs in the 288-member state Assembly. Santosh Bangar, the MLA from Kalamnuri in Hingoli district, on Monday morning switched over to the Shinde camp. Earlier, in a jolt to Uddhav Thackeray ahead of the Narvekar also recognised the appointment of Bharat Gogawale from the Shinde camp as the chief whip of the Sena, removing Sunil Prabhu, who belongs to the Thackeray faction. The development comes as a major setback to the Thackeray faction, which will be bound by the whip to be issued by Gogawale for the trust vote.

Maharashtra Assembly: How the numbers add up in the Maharashtra Assembly, and possible scenarios

To split the Shiv Sena without attracting disqualification under the anti-defection law, Shinde would need to have 36 MLAs to go along with him. That is because two-thirds of the strength of the party in the House comes to 37. Claims apart, it is not clear right now whether Shinde has anywhere close to that number. Another scenario is if Shinde and all the MLAs reportedly with him choose to resign. The strength of the House then becomes 261, and the halfway mark becomes 131. Of course the MVA numbers too would go down by 26 from the present 152. From there it would be a race for the independents and legislators from minor parties. The stand of 29 legislators from smaller parties and Independents is likely to be crucial. Don’t miss out on ET Prime stories!
