Boom market for human organs – Matters India

By M L Satyan Bengaluru, Aug 30, 2022: Today human body can be considered a ‘treasury’. It is a living factory that can manufacture products that no laboratory can recreate. From kidneys to hair, to eggs, sperm and blood, many body parts can be sold through both legal and illegal avenues, and the dollar value increases with the amount of risk involved. Many people today sell or are forced to sell their vital organs for various reasons. The human organs have been reduced to mere commercial commodities. All over the world, human organs too are being trafficked, sometimes with, and sometimes without, the consent of the ‘owner’. People are directly, or indirectly, being forced to sell their own organs for a price, often to agents, who make exorbitant profits in this business exploiting the poor and vulnerable. The organs can be acquired in many different and terrible ways. People may be kidnapped, killed and sold, especially children, for their organs. Other ways for the agents to procure the organs are through deception or coercion. Prices for organs vary in the black market and obviously there is no official pricing guide. But, like all business transactions there are hidden costs and everyone wants to get their cut of the profits: the surgeon, the organ agent, and assistants. Organs are worth vast sums of money in the market, with hospitals regularly paying six figures for kidneys and hearts. There is a whole industry of agents creaming the profits and there is a considerab...

How much for my kidney?

Delhi Police recently blew the lid off a kidney transplant racket run out of Apollo Hospital. But it will take more than police action to provide patients with affordable dialysis, and shorter queues for legal transplant Shuv will turn 5 this August. “He plays, runs about,” says his father Bhanu Prakash Singh. But Shuv’s is not like other kids his age. A year after his birth, the boy started suffering from complications in his heart, which doctors identified as congenital defects. The young resident of Etah district in Uttar Pradesh is now on the waiting list for heart transplant at Delhi’s All India Institute of Medical Sciences. The family first took the boy to a private hospital in Gurgaon. “The doctors there suggested that we opt for artificial heart transplant. Following this, we decided to take our child to AIIMS. The hospital will contact us once there is any donor, and if there is a possibility to carry out a heart transplant on Shuv. We have no option but to wait now,” says Singh. Shuv is the younger of Singh’s two children. There has been little progress in addressing the demand-supply gap in organs in the capital in the last decade, say doctors. With little awareness on organ donation, the gap is growing, say experts. Recently, an interstate kidney racket was busted at Apollo Hospitals, Delhi in about a dozen people have been arrested so far. According to police, while the kingpin used to sell kidneys for Rs 20-25 lakh, the middlemen used to receive Rs 1-2 lakh....

Artificial Kidney Human Trials 2022

The Kidney Project successfully tests a prototype bioartificial kidney Pontillo and Mischak identified 273 urinary peptides that differ between patients with CKD and healthy subjects, namely the marker CKD273 which includes fragments of collagen and of proteins involved in inflammation and tissue repair, by using capillary electrophoresis-mass spectroscopy on 230 CKD patients and 379 control subjects . Further studies have implicated the potential superiority of CKD73 in the prediction and diagnosis of CKD over traditional markers leading to a letter of support of the US Food and Drug Administration . According to a cross-sectional study conducted on 1990 participants, CKD273 performed better than traditional markers and correlated better than albuminuria with eGFR and better predicted rapid CKD progression . Similar findings were observed in another study conducted on 2087 participants, in which CKD273 added to the prediction of CKD G3 after accounting for baseline eGFR, albuminuria and covariables . In a randomized controlled trial in diabetic patients without albuminuria, CKD273 predicted the development of albuminuria . Furthermore, the same CE-MS analysis of a single urine sample may be used to derive other peptidomics markers that predict the rapid loss of eGFR better than albuminuria in patients who do not fulfill current eGFR criteria for CKD , or correlate with kidney fibrosis as detected in kidney biopsy or provide information on the underlying cause of CKD and i...

Want a kidney? Just go online. Price negotiable Desperate need for money, lack of adequate organs lead to mushrooming of cyber forums for illegal sales; agents involved claim to ‘facilitate transplants’ at various hospitals for hefty prices June 17, 2013 02:49 am | Updated June 20, 2013 11:59 am IST - CHENNAI: It’s not just books, clothes and electronic gadgets that are up for sale online — kidneys too, are available. Though selling of human organs is illegal in the country, the demand for kidneys is such that despite measures to curb sales, open online forums are thriving. For people waiting for a kidney transplant — 2,811 in Tamil Nadu alone — these websites are a shortcut to getting a donor, a process that could take years legally. And since those offering their kidneys are usually desperate for money, if the price is right they are more than willing to sell quickly. Numbers provided Message boards online are full of details including names, ages, blood groups, email addresses, health statuses, and in a few cases, even phone numbers. Some are willing to travel to any part of the country to make the sale. Take Rahul (name changed) for instance, who is from Rajasthan. He has posted a message on a social networking site, saying he is ready to sell one of his kidn...
