iPhone 14 Pro Max review: This is the biggest and best of everything in an iPhone

The iPhone 14 Pro Max is truly the best of everything in the current iPhone world. It’s got the best design, the biggest screen, the best cameras, and the smartest display. You’ll pay for all of that but, if you’re determined to get an iPhone and want the absolute apex device, this is clearly the handset for you. If you can live with a slightly smaller display, and want less weight in your pocket, we might recommend the more compact 6.1-inch iPhone 14 Pro, instead. $899 / £949 / AU$1,579 for a 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Plus might sound good on paper, but consumers will, apparently, gladly pay $1,099 / £1,199 / AU$1,899 for the full-featured iPhone 14 Pro Max – what they consider the At least Apple and its carrier partners are offering some decent There are even $1,000 trade-in deals in the US, though Apple and the carriers have to verify the trade-in value – and don’t expect to get that kind of cash for an iPhone 6 or even an iPhone 8. If we’re talking about value, though, the iPhone 14 Pro Max earns its keep with snappy performance, a truly radiant screen that now can reach a sun-beating 2,000-nit brilliance, while also delivering new low-power 1Hz always-on display functionality that’s just there for a quick glance. The thing people will be talking about is the new This island still contains the front camera (upgraded with autofocus) and sensors for 3D measurement as part of Face ID, but some technology, like the proximity sensor, is now hidden behind the display. What’s left i...

In a year packed with numerous phone releases, Apple's iPhone 14 lineup is curious. There is the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max, which represent the pinnacle of the company's design, software and hardware. The iPhone 14 Pro is notably defined by an oval-shaped screen cut-out for the True Depth camera, which replaces the notch, called the Dynamic Island. But then, there's the iPhone 14 which seems like a repackaged iPhone 13 Pro without the stainless steel body or the third rear camera for telephoto pictures. Apple discontinued the iPhone 13 Mini and replaced it with a bigger version of the 14 called the iPhone 14 Plus. Starting at $929, it's m...

iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max — reasons to buy and skip

The iPhone 14 Pro takes things in a different direction. Apple's Pro models now feature a 48MP main camera, allowing you to combine four pixels into a single one to produce brighter, more detailed shots. The ProRAW mode on the phones can capture uncompressed 48MP images that give you greater editing flexibility. And there's even a 2x zoom mode utilizing the main camera. (Image credit: Future) The ultrawide and telephoto lenses get improvements of their own, with the former now featuring larger pixels that let in more light and improve the macro camera mode. Meanwhile, the telephoto lens on the iPhone 14 Pro models now supports a 6x digital zoom on top of the 3x optical zoom before. Even the front TrueDepth camera enjoys a wider aperture for improved low-light photos and built-in autofocus. Low-light photography seems to be a major focus for Apple with the iPhone 14 series, as the phones' new Photonic Engine aims to improve mid- to low-light photography on all of three rear cameras — anywhere rom a 2x improvement to a 3x improvement depending on the lens. And Apple adds to the iPhone's video-capture bag of tricks with a new Apple typically dominates the A faster A16 Bionic chipset While the (Image credit: Apple) The pace-setting performance that iPhone users enjoy is all but certain to continue here. While we have yet to benchmark the iPhone 14 Pro, Apple tells us that the A16 Bionic's 6-core CPU is 40% faster than comparable chipsets from rival chip makers. (That's Qualcom...

iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max Review: Welcome to Apple's Dynamic Island

2022 Editors' Note: The iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max come with improved cameras, iOS 16, the fastest phone processor we've ever tested, and an upgraded yet familiar design. Features like the Dynamic Island and Emergency SOS via Satellite make the 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max some of the best phones you can buy in 2022, which is why they received a CNET Editors' Choice Award. The original review follows. Apple's iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max may look identical to last year's iPhone 13 Pro on the back, but don't let that fool you. It's the iPhone 14 Pro's screen where there's something different and wonderful going on. The iPhone's display notch, which has defined Face ID iPhones since 2017's iPhone X, has been replaced with a pill-shaped screen cutout that houses an upgraded TrueDepth camera system. On its own, that cutout will make some people happier than the notch did. But it's the space around the cutout, which now shows system alerts and background activities, that's become one of my favorite features. Apple calls it the Dynamic Island, and it enlarges and shrinks when you receive a call and to display the music you're playing, timers and other notifications. I know it's not the best name, but it's truly one of the best features on the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max. The new Apple phones also get upgraded cameras, a faster processor, an always-on display and iOS 16 as well as new safety features including Crash Detection and Emergency SOS via Satellite. The 6.1-inch iPhone 14 Pro s...

Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max Review

Hands On With the Apple iPhone 14 Pro Lineup The phone measures 6.33 by 3.05 by 0.31 inches (HWD) and weighs 8.47 ounces—dimensions that are within fractions of a millimeter and just 0.01 ounces changed from last year's model. That makes it a large and heavy device, but Pro Max buyers should be well used to these dimensions and weight by now. It's about on par with the While the design isn't particularly exciting, Apple continues to lead the market with materials and build quality. The iPhone 14 Pro Max features a stainless steel frame (as opposed to the standard iPhone 14's aluminum) and is protected with the company's own Ceramic Shield. Apple says its Shield is stronger than competing glass, but that's not something we can test in a practical manner. Phones from Google and Samsung ship with Gorilla Glass Victus or Victus+, which is the top-of-the-line material from Corning. The iPhone 14 Pro Max has the same (Credit: Eric Zeman) The phone has the same flat side edges as the last two Pro Max models, with controls scattered around the frame. Flat-edged phones are less comfortable to hold than those with rounded frames, and that is certainly true of the iPhone 14 Pro Max—but dang that stainless steel feels good. The left side houses the ringer switch and separate volume toggles, while a combined power/screen lock button graces the right edge. The switch and buttons have superb travel and feedback. Apple's decade-old Lightning port is centered on the bottom edge of the phon...
