IBUPROFEN+PARACETAMOL: Uses, Side Effects and Medicines

IBUPROFEN+PARACETAMOL belongs to a class of painkillers called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). It relieves symptoms of muscle pain, arthritis pain, dysmenorrhea (painful periods or menstrual cramps), and dental pain and reduces fever. Pain can be temporary (acute) or long-lasting (chronic). Acute pain is for a short time caused by damage to the tissues of the muscle, bone, or other organs. In contrast, chronic pain lasts for a long duration and is caused due to pathologies like nerve damage, osteoarthritis etc. Besides this, it is also useful for dental pain, which can occur due to damage to the tooth nerve, infection, decay, extractionor injury. IBUPROFEN+PARACETAMOL is composed of twomedicines, namely Ibuprofen andParacetamol. Ibuprofen is known to have an analgesic and anti-inflammatory effect for reducing mild to moderate pain. It works by blocking the effect of a chemical known as prostaglandin, responsible for inducing pain and inflammation in our body. Paracetamol acts as a mild analgesic and antipyretic (fever reducer). It lowers the elevated body temperature and mild pain by inhibiting the synthesis of a chemical messenger (prostaglandin) and promoting heat loss (through sweating) that helps reset the hypothalamic thermostat. Together, these twomedicines help reduce mild to moderate pain in a shorter duration. IBUPROFEN+PARACETAMOL is available in both oral tablet and syrup dosage forms. You should take the syrup form of IBUPROFEN+PARACETAMOL with ...

Paracetamol/ibuprofen combinations for acute pain

With an implementation date of 1 February 2018 set for all codeine-based analgesics to become prescription-only, patients may seek advice on alternative oral OTC medicines for managing acute pain. The evidence suggests that paracetamol/ibuprofen combinations available as a single pill can be offered as an alternative to codeine-based analgesics for short-term management of pain in patients able to take NSAIDs and for whom paracetamol alone is not sufficient. • Non-pharmacological measures and/or paracetamol are still preferred for mild pain. • However, paracetamol/ibuprofen combinations may be considered as an alternative to codeine-based analgesics for short-term management of moderate pain in patients able to take NSAIDs. • Evidence in acute pain states suggests paracetamol/ibuprofen combinations may frequently offer better pain relief than either component alone. • The same precautions apply to use of paracetamol/ibuprofen combinations as to either active ingredient when used alone. • OTC paracetamol/ibuprofen combinations are not indicated for chronic (long-term) pain. On 20 December 2016, after a long period of public consultation, the Therapeutic Goods Administration announced its final decision on the rescheduling of codeine-containing products. From February 2018, all analgesics and cough and cold medicines containing low-dose codeine and currently Schedule 2 (Pharmacy medicines) or Schedule 3 (Pharmacist Only medicines), will no longer be available over the counte...
