Phage Virion Protein Prediction Server

Vibrio Phage Reference Laboratory Since the late 1960s when molecular and modern methods were not widely available, lytic phages of V. cholerae have been used for typing of V. cholerae O1 strains which remained primary choice for classification of V. cholerae. Different bacteriophages have been used to distinguish pathogenic strains of bacteria from clinical isolates based on their phage susceptibility. Due to their natural specificity, ease of maintenance and straightforward production, phage owns several desirable characteristics which make them especially suited as bacterial strains discriminator. Vibrio phage reference Laboratory at ICMR-National Institute of Cholera and Enteric Diseases, Kolkata is involved in research on cholera phages and developed phage typing scheme for V.cholerae O1 biotype Eltor and V. cholerae O139 strains for regular use to discriminate cholera strains. Although the therapeutic use of bacteriophages or the phage therapy was actively utilized soon after the discovery of bacteriophages in the early 1900s, after the discovery of antibiotics it became gradually collapsed/largely neglected due to widespread use of antibiotics to cure infections. Today, less than a century after the discovery of antibiotics, health care is facing a major threat from antimicrobial resistance. Widespread use of antibiotics resulted in the development of MDR bacteria which is a major problem in healthcare units today. As per the recent reports, Anti-Microbial Resistanc...

Health research unit: NBMCH to hand over building to ICMR

The North Bengal Medical College and Hospital (NBMCH) will hand over a three-storied building to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR)-National Institute of Cholera and Enteric Diseases (NICED) for the proposed model rural health research unit (MRHRU) on 15 May. There have been allegations against the NBMCH authorities that the process of handing over the facility to the ICMR-NICED was delayed even after completion of the necessary formalities. The first-of-its-kind project in the state will help create infrastructure for transfer of technology to the rural level for improving the quality of health services to the rural population. According to officials, following the handover, the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) will undertake infrastructure development work. NBMCH patient welfare committee chairman Gautam Deb held a meeting with clinical pharmacologist and the nodal officer of the MRHRU, ICMR-NICED, Dr Sandip Mukhopadhyay, consultant engineer of NICED Swapnil Biswas and NBMCH authorities today “MRHRU will be an important development for health research oriented works in the region. There was a slight delay in handing over the building, since there was a record room of the NBMCH. We will hand over the building on 15 May. The CPWD will carry out the civil work. We are expecting it to be functional before Durga Puja. We will provide all necessary cooperation,” Mr Deb said. Meanwhile, Dr Santanu Hazra of the department of microbiology, who was acting as the n...

ICMR-NICED has developed and validated a multiplex Real time PCR assay for detection of enteric viruses (Rotavirus, Norovirus GI/GII and Adenovirus) named EnViro-Qplex which is ready for transfer of technology. Enteric viruses commonly associated with human waterborne illnesses include noroviruses, hepatitis A virus (HAV), hepatitis E virus (HEV), rotaviruses and enteroviruses. Enteric viruses are those human viruses that are primarily transmitted by the fecal-oral route, either by person-to-person contact or by ingestion of contaminated food or water, although they may also be shed in vomitus. ICMR-NICED, Kolkata, one of the constituent institutes of the ICMR, is a pioneer institute in research on diarrhoeal diseases. NICED scientists have developed and patented many vaccine candidates against enteric pathogens. Diagnostic assays against enteric bacteria, parasites and viruses are being tested and validated. It is also a recognized center for validation of...
