Insulating Glass Insulating Glass Units (IGUs) are designed to provide thermal insulation for building envelopes. They are used to reduce building heat loss and/or heat gain depending on the climate and glass configuration. Insulating Glass Units are sometimes called Double Glazing or Sealed Insulating Glass Units (SIGU). An insulated glass unit (commonly referred to as an IGU or IG) is comprised of 2 or more lites of glass, separated with a desiccant filled spacer bar and is hermitically sealed around the edges to form a single unit. The hermetically sealed air space creates a barrier for heat and sound transfer making IGUs very effective in reducing air-to-air heat gain or loss. When combined with a low-e or reflective coating, the insulating performance of IGUs is significantly improved. How IGUs Work Clear monolithic glass accounts for less than 5% of a window’s insulation value, the rest is being supplied by the still air layers of the environment on either side of the glass. Since the heat flow resistance of still air is much greater than that of glass, a glass unit made of two panes enclosing an air space will have about twice the insulation value of a single pane window (half the heat loss). A unit with three lites of glass and two sealed air spacers will have three times the insulating value. The additional airspace allows for better insulating properties, improving the unit’s u-vale. 1 What is pressure-equalization of IGUs and what are the advantages? Conventional insulating glass units (IGUs) are made of several sheets of glass separated by spacers and sealed hermetically around the edges. The cavity between panes is usually filled with argon. The seal keeps the ingress of moisture into the cavity low to prevent water condensing on the inside surfaces of the glass panes and to avoid any corrosion of metallic low-e coatings. Further, the seal prevents the fill gas from escaping. There is a major drawback associated with this design: an exchange of gas or air between the cavity and the atmosphere is impossible. Thus, whenever the temperature in the cavity or the external air pressure changes, the pressure in the cavity changes as well. This causes the panes to bulge inwards or out, inducing flexural stresses in them. The edge seal is subjected to compressive or tensile loads. (Figure 1) Further, moveable solar shading devices integrated in the IGU might get trapped and damaged by panes bulging inwards. Thus, the overall depth of conventional IGUs has to be restricted to avoid any damage caused by changes in air pressure or temperature.
