These fits can plague people with narcolepsy, in which a person enters directly into REM sleep—they’re awake, and then they’re suddenly partially conscious and dreaming. This situation is comparable to a hallucination before reaching a true dreaming state. “I’ve experienced a lot of hypnagogic hallucinations,” Rein admits. “They’re definitely pretty wild.” These types of hallucinations aren’t very common, because you need to have some sort of condition that affects your sleep, he adds. Hypnopompic Hallucinations Hypnopompic hallucinations, on the other hand, happen while you’re waking up. They are connected to sleep paralysis, which can be downright scary. “What happens is in sleep paralysis, during REM sleep, when you’re dreaming, your body is paralyzed, you have your brain intentionally disconnected from your body so that you’re not moving around acting out your dreams, for obvious reasons, of course,” Rein says. Why Sleep Paralysis Makes You See Ghosts

Imagine waking up in pitch darkness paralyzed from head to toe. You try to scream but can’t. Suddenly you realize there is a ghost with bloody fangs hovering over you. Before you know, the creature violently attacks you. While this sounds like something out of a horror movie, experiences like this called sleep paralysis are quite common as shown in our research in more than six countries. Sleep paralysis occurs at the transition between wakefulness and rapid-eye-movement (REM) sleep. During this stage of sleep, you have crisp life-like dreams. To prevent you from acting out these dreams and hurting yourself, your brain temporarily paralyzes your entire body. This transition is tightly controlled by chemicals that tilt you between sleep and wakefulness. But sometimes, you wake up while you’re still under the “spell” of REM paralysis, leaving you stuck. In a sense, wakefulness and the dream world collide. More from TIME Based on over a decade of research, we’ve developed a theory to explain how your brain conjures up these compelling images. Instead of epic encounters with otherworldly entities, these visions reflect natural disruptions to your brain’s ability to generate a unified sense of self; the feeling we all have of being anchored here and now in our bodies. I feel firmly grounded in my own flesh and bone and not someone else’s body (I feel my arm belongs to me and not you, say). This sense of embodiment arises in the brain. Phenomena like this provide penetrating ins...

As a person drifts off to sleep, their body begins to cycle through two types of sleep: In sleep paralysis, the lines between sleep and wakefulness become blurred. But certain phenomena such as Sleep paralysis When we sleep, we cycle through different stages. We start the night in non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep – which gets progressively deeper. We then cycle back until we hit rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. During REM sleep we are most likely to have vivid dre...

The Worlds Oldest Demon: The Night

It’s the middle of the night, and you suddenly wake up. However, you realize that this is not an ordinary case of insomnia. You can’t move, your arms and legs glued to the bed, and you sense an evil presence in the room. Welcome to sleep paralysis, and the But don’t worry. You are not alone. These hallucinations are different from normal dreaming. You might see, hear, or feel things that are not there. Sensing danger, feeling suffocated, and feeling like you are having an "out-of-body" experience are other common sleep paralysis hallucinations. Sometimes people see threatening imaginary creatures, known as "sleep demons." Sleep paralysis demons were first identified in 1664 by a Dutch physician, who believed they were caused by a demon-like creature that attacked its victims as they slept. What Does Sleep Paralysis Feel Like? Normally, you have smooth transitions between the different phases of sleep. But when a transition is interrupted, you might experience sleep paralysis. This can happen either when you first fall asleep or when you're about to wake up. • Inability to move or talk during sleep transitions • Trying to cry or scream for help, but having it come out as a soft voice • Limited eye movement • The sensation of suffocating or breathlessness • Feeling like someone is sitting or standing on your chest • Out-of-body experience (like you're looking down at yourself) • Hallucinations • Make sure you're • Try to wake up and go to bed at the same time every day. • Avoid alcohol and caffeine in the hours before bedtime. • Try to sleep on your side.
