A new study published in the journal Atmospheric Research examines the effects of fireworks on health. Researchers discovered large displays at celebrations for Independence Day in the United States, Australia Day, China’s Lunar New Year generate air pollutants with "significant" impact on air quality and the environment. "While sources of particulate matter such as power plants and vehicles are of concern, events with fireworks and bonfires can increase ambient PM levels and lead to short-term adverse effects on air quality, visibility, and human health," stated author Dr. Ajit Singh, from the University of Birmingham. Eight times the average of particulate matter (PM) concentration is generated during and immediately after fireworks displays, with concentrations generally returning to background levels within 24 hours. In the short-term, exposure to fireworks-related PM can lead to a worsening of respiratory illnesses, including asthma. PM and gases emitted from fireworks also trigger cardiovascular diseases and reduce lung function. PM is among the top global environmental health concerns and nearly three million people died from exposure to PM 2.5 in 2017, according to researchers. Short-term exposure to air pollution has been associated with cardiovascular and respiratory mortality and morbidity. Little is known about associations between air pollution caused by firework events and daily mortality. We investigated whether particulate matter from fireworks during New Year’s celebrations was associated with daily mortality. We analyzed the celebrations of the years 1995–2012. PM 10 concentrations increased dramatically during the firework events. Countrywide, the daily average PM 10 concentrations from 27–30 December was 29 μg/m 3 and increased during the first hour of the New Year by 277 μg/m 3. In the more densely populated areas of the Netherlands the increase was even steeper, 598 μg/m 3 in the first hour of the New Year. No consistent associations were found using linear regression models between PM 10 concentrations during the first six hours of 1 January and daily mortality in the general population. Yet, using a case-crossover analysis firework-days and PM 10 concentrations were associated with daily mortality. Therefore, in light of the contradictory results obtained with the different statistical analyses, we recommend further epidemiological research on the health effects of exposure to firework emissions. BENGALURU: Students of around 400 universities will study the ill-effects of fireworks. The UGC has instructed all universities and colleges to include a module on the ill-effects of firecrackers in the paper on environmental studies, a compulsory subject for all undergraduate students. UGC secretary Jaspal S Sandhu says the UGC wants varsities and affiliated colleges to organize forums, discussions and presentations related to the hazards of firecrackers. “The UGC took this decision after it observed the effort of world leaders at COP21 in Paris recently, and underscored the preservation of the environment as our collective responsibility.’’ The December 11 UGC circular said: “We know that the smoke from fireworks consists mainly of particulate matter than can enter the lungs and severely affect people with asthma or multiple chemical sensitivity. Fireworks also spray a toxic concoction of carcinogenic and hormone-disrupting substances that seep into the soil and water.… Worse are chemicals in fireworks that persist in the environment and do not break down.” The UGC, referring to earlier studies, said on festive occasions, the levels of particulate matter in the air increases beyond permissible levels. “It is necessary to educate students about the severity of toxicity of fireworks, so also to discourage their usage,’’ the UGC secretary said.

Modern fireworks are often made with perchlorates instead of potassium nitrate. Perchlorates are chemicals that feature a central chlorine atom bonded to four oxygen atoms. Although their effect on the environment is still a question mark, studies have shown that perchlorates are hazardous to the health of mammals, including humans. Data has shown that the presence of perchlorates may impact the health and fitness of certain animals by causing their thyroids to swell and threatening normal growth and development. There are bacteria in nature capable of breaking down perchlorates, which suggests that perchlorates are biodegradable under certain conditions. The perchlorates and particulates most likely do not pose a long-term threat. While it typically only takes a few hours for particulates to dissipate, the same can’t be said about perchlorates and some of the other chemicals fireworks contain.
