EXPLAINED: What is an Impact Player? Know all about new rule set to make its debut in Indian cricket

While a team always names 4 players as substitutes, only one of them can be used as an Impact Player. The captain or head coach or the team manager has to inform on-field or the fourth umpire about using the services of the Impact Player. As per the BCCI's rulings, once a player is replaced by the Impact Player, he cannot return to the field even as a substitute fielder. The batting team will not have to wait for the end of the over to send an impact player if it loses a wicket. If a batsman is out in the middle of an over, the Impact Player can be sent in straightaway. But a bowling team can introduce the Impact Player only after the end of the over or if a bowler is injured while completing the over. The use of Impact Player can be easily understood by an example. If Delhi 8 down for 170 after 13 overs and there's no recognised batsman on the crease, they can bring in a specialised batsman from the bench and make it easy for his team. The bowling team can also use an Impact Player to its advantage according to the situation.

Only if playing XI has three overseas players, then an overseas player comes in place of another as ‘Impact Substitute’. Call it a coincidence, but four veterans, 40-year-old Amit Mishra (166 wickets), 34-year olds Piyush Chawla (157 wickets), Mohit Sharma (92 wickets) and Ishant Sharma (84 wickets) whose India careers are all but over have been bought at their respective base prices of Rs 50 lakh in the auction. Mishra was picked by Lucknow Super Giants which has two battle hardened coach-cum mentor pair of Gautam Gambhir-Vijay Dahiya. Delhi Capitals roped in Ishant, while Gujarat Titans head coach Ashish Nehra having bowled alongside Mohit during latter’s best years in CSK, has decided to give him a chance. Not to forget the wily Chawla, who had made his Test debut more than 16 summers back as a teenager, is back with the Mumbai Indians. “Amit Mishra is a fantastic call by Gautam and his coaching staff. Look, you don’t need to check his skills as ...
