Diana's Put to the Cosmic Test in Wonder Woman: Evolution

Wonder Woman is, of course, an Amazon with extraordinary powers, but she also represents the most aspirational qualities of humanity. And that’s being put to the test in a big way in new eight-issue series In Wonder Woman: Evolution, Diana is plucked from Earth by a distant cosmic entity and cast as Earth's proxy for a trial judging humankind's worthiness to exist in the universe. No pressure. What follows is a sci-fi epic with Diana forced to navigate a series of cosmic challenges, looking to save humanity without losing her own. DC Nation spoke with Phillips about the big questions asked by Wonder Woman: Evolution, working with Hawthorne in his DC debut, and how this story aims to examine who Diana is underneath the familiar iconography. Stephanie, what’s it like as a writer to be simultaneously writing one of the most popular morally ambiguous characters around in Harley Quinn, and writing one of pop culture’s most virtuous heroes in Wonder Woman: Evolution? This is the best part about writing for DC—the characters, especially female characters, offer a lot of diversity that is so much fun for a writer. Harley gets to strangle psychiatric orderlies with a feather boa one day, and Wonder Woman is fighting a hoard of alien foes with sword and shield the next. Despite those differences, I think there’s some overlap in terms of both Harley and Diana looking for ways to relate to the world in the stories I’m writing for them. Albeit, they obviously have drastically different...

Wonder Woman

Wonder Woman Beautiful as Aphrodite, wise as Athena, swifter than Hermes, and stronger than Hercules, Princess Diana of Themyscira fights for peace in Man's World. One of the most beloved and iconic DC Super Heroes of all time, Wonder Woman has stood for nearly eighty years as a symbol of truth, justice and equality to people everywhere. Raised on the hidden island of Themyscira, also known as Paradise Island, Diana is an Amazon, like the figures of Greek legend, and her people's gift to humanity. As Themyscira's emissary to Man's World, Diana has made it her duty to lead by example, even if the differences between her birthplace and new home sometimes present hurdles for her to jump. She has come to represent the possibility and potential of life without war, hate or violence, and she is a beacon of hope to all who find themselves in need. She stands as an equal among the most powerful Super Heroes, with a sense of purpose to protect the world from injustice in all forms. Diana's job, however, is anything but easy. Constantly torn between her mission to promote peace and her need to fight back against the pervasive violence of her new home, Diana struggles to walk a line between her warrior strength and endless compassion each and every day. Is Wonder Woman a God in the DC Universe?

Warning: This article contains spoilers forShazam! Fury of the Gods. Following its complete overhaul by new co-CEOs of DC Studios, James Gunn and Peter Safran, The Flash movie is set to course-correct the whole universe by giving it a fresh start, so there’s really no telling what the future holds for original members of the Justice League, including Gal Gadot’s As it stands, we’ve seen the powerful Amazon warrior princess in five films (six if you include Zack Snyder’s Justice League), and she is set to make an appearance in The Flash alongside Batfleck, aka Ben Affleck’s Batman. From what we’ve learned throughout those outings, Woman Woman is not a god but a demi-god, i.e. a being with partial divine status. Wonder Woman is the superhero alias given to Princess Diana of Themyscira. Diana’s lineage is incredibly powerful – her mother is Hippolyta, the Queen of the Amazons, and her father is Zeus, the King of the Old Gods. Albeit inspired by Greek and Roman mythology, the Amazons and the Old Gods have a specific history in the DC Universe (or the DC Extended Universe as it was known until the recent changes in command). via Warner Bros. Amazons are superhuman warriors created by Zeus to protect the human world, who possess superhuman strength, superhuman beauty, and superhuman intelligence. As an Old God, Zeus is an immortal, nearly invulnerable all-powerful being who can manipulate magic and thunder. It’s easy to understand, then, why, as the offspring of both, Diana is o...

The History Of DC's Amazons Explained

But you don't get Wonder Woman or Diana Prince without the Amazons. The warrior women who raised Wonder Woman on the mythical island of Themyscira are a crucial part of who the heroine is. To understand Wonder Woman, you have to know a bit about the matriarchal and insular society that she left in order to help defend the wider world. With that in mind, we've put together a bit of an overview of one of DC's most interesting peoples. "Wonder Woman is psychological propaganda for the new type of woman who should, I believe, rule the world," Marston Much in the same way that Superman represented the perfect ideal of American ideas, Wonder Woman was an ambassador to "Man's World" in the comics and our own patriarchal society. She was "beautiful as Aphrodite, wise as Athena, swifter than Hermes, and stronger than Hercules" to show all the things women can be. And she had an entire island of intelligent and powerful women backing her up in a perfect, man-free society. Women of Amazonia were raised to be warriors, with nearly all of the Amazon women coming to look like their classical Greek counterparts: fierce, tall and skilled at fighting in the off-chance that someone might try and try to take their country from them. Marston also pulled from antiquity in his stories of outsider intrusion, bringing in the The first major invasion of Amazonia by men was led by Heracles. Though the Greek myth involved Heracles taking Queen Hippolyta's girdle as one of his incredible labors, Mars...

‘Wonder Woman’ Is the DC Universe’s Best Superhero Movie Yet – IndieWire

“ This Diana is startlingly pure of heart and clear-eyed in her vision. She’sa neat sort-of throwback to the circa-1978 “Superman,” which was similarly anchored by a superhero of intense goodness. It’s a fine counterpoint in a franchise so often given over to so-called “dark and gritty” sensibilities. Allan Heinberg’s script (with story credits for both Zack Snyder and franchise newbie Jason Fuchs) provides a compelling backstory for the Amazons and Diana that pulls from various incarnations of the classic character. When we first meetDiana (played first by young Lilly Aspel), she is the lone kid on the Amazon island of Themyscira, born from equal parts clay and her mother’s burning desire to have a child. She’s clearly beloved by the rest of the Amazons, especially her doting mother Queen Hippolyta (a regal Connie Nielsen) and her bad-ass aunt Antiope (Robin Wright, a warrior through and through), but she’s wary of being too sheltered by the affection. She wants to fight. “Wonder Woman” It’s a natural impulse for a young Amazon, but Queen Hippolyta is repelled by the idea.Diana responds by taking up clandestine battle lessons with Antiope, who eagerly coaches her to become the best warrior she can possibly be. It’s an early sign of Diana’s headstrong nature, but also her reverence for the Amazons’ mission to protect humanity.Even before she’s met her copious adversaries, Diana iskeenly aware of her duty to use her skills to defend others. That’s a hero. There are other her...
