Deforestation and Forest Degradation

Forests cover 31% of the land area on our planet. They help people thrive and survive by, for example, purifying water and air and providing people with jobs; some 13.2 million people across the world have a job in the forest sector and another 41 million have a job that is related to the sector. Many animals also rely on forests. Forests are home to more than three-quarters of the world’s life on land. Forests also play a critical role in mitigating climate change because they act as a carbon sink—soaking up carbon dioxide that would otherwise be free in the atmosphere and contribute to ongoing changes in climate patterns. But forests around the world are under threat, jeopardizing these benefits. The threats manifest themselves in the form of deforestation and forest degradation. The main cause of deforestation is agriculture (poorly planned infrastructure is emerging as a big threat too) and the main cause of forest degradation is illegal logging. In 2019, the tropics lost close to 30 soccer fields' worth of trees every single minute. Deforestation is a particular concern in tropical rain forests because these forests are home to much of the world’s biodiversity. For example, in the Amazon around 17% of the forest has been lost in the last 50 years, mostly due to forest conversion for cattle ranching. Deforestation in this region is particularly rampant near more populated areas, roads and rivers, but even remote areas have been encroached upon when valuable mahogany, g...

Terrestrial Biomes – Introductory Biology: Evolutionary and Ecological Perspectives

By the end of this section, you will be able to: • Identify the two major abiotic factors that determine the type of terrestrial biome in an area • Recognize distinguishing characteristics of each of the eight major terrestrial biomes Earth’s biomes can be either terrestrial or aquatic. Terrestrial biomes are based on land, while aquatic biomes include both ocean and freshwater biomes. The eight major terrestrial biomes on Earth are each distinguished by characteristic temperatures and amount of precipitation. Annual totals and fluctuations of precipitation affect the kinds of vegetation and animal life that can exist in broad geographical regions. Temperature variation on a daily and seasonal basis is also important for predicting the geographic distribution of a biome. Since a biome is defined by climate, the same biome can occur in geographically distinct areas with similar climates (Figure 1). There are also large areas on Antarctica, Greenland, and in mountain ranges that are covered by permanent glaciers and support very little life. Strictly speaking, these are not considered biomes and in addition to extremes of cold, they are also often deserts with very low precipitation. Figure 1: Each of the world’s eight major biomes is distinguished by characteristic temperatures and amount of precipitation. Polar ice caps and mountains are also shown. Tropical Forest Tropical rainforests are also referred to as tropical wet forests. This biome is found in equatorial regions ...

Tropical Deciduous Forest – My take

Location Tropical Deciduous Forests are located at tropical and subtropical latitudes. Tropical Deciduous Forest are the monsoon forests found in large parts of India, Northern Australia and in Central America. Tropical Deciduous Forests thrive where the rainfall is between 70cm and 200 cm. In India these forests are found in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, plains of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana too. In Madhya Pradesh the Satpura forests are the examples of Tropical Deciduous Forests. Deciduous forests tend to thrive in areas that have mountains, and particularly in places that have a range of types of soil. Tropical Deciduous Forest on World Map Climate The temperature in these forests does not go to the extremes. They go through all the 4 seasons and experience seasonal changes like trees shed their leaves in the dry season to conserve water. The trees in these forests shed their leaves for about six to eight weeks in summer. Though these forests occur in climates that are warm year-round, and may receive several hundred centimeters of rain per year, they have long dry seasons which last several months and vary with geographic location. These seasonal droughts have great impact on all living things in the forest. Dry forests are highly sensitive to excessive burning and deforestation. Vegetation Tropical dry broadleaf forests are territories with a forest cover that is not very dense and has often an unkempt, irregular appearance, especially in th...
