Conclave 2023: Operational readiness at high level, says Army chief Manoj Pande amid tensions with China, Pak

By India Today News Desk: The Indian armed forces are at a transformational phase where they are growing operational efficiency while at the same time, cognisant of the threat from Pakistan and China, maintaining a high level of operational readiness, said Chief of Army Staff General Manoj Pande. Speaking at the India Today Conclave 2023, Army chief Gen Manoj Pande said the Indian military is taking a number of measures to modernise by exploiting the potential of niche technology. He said the roll out of Artificial Intelligence (AI) can be a game changer in warfare. The Army chief said the government’s push for atmanirbhar or self-reliance, especially in the defence manufacturing sector, is a positive step. “Unless countries are self-reliant and have secure supply chains, it will be very difficult for them to address security concerns and move forward in the future,” said COAS Manoj Pande. He also stressed the need to wean the Indian armed forces off its dependence on defence exports from superpowers like US, Russia and France. ON AGNIPATH SCHEME The Army chief said the Agnipath recruitment scheme, introduced by the Centre last year, is a win-win policy not just for the military but for the society and country at large. Calling Agnipath a transformational reform, Gen Manoj Pande acknowledged that getting the implementation right is key. Issues like training the recruits in a short frame of time is critical. "Agniveer is a transformational reform...It is a win-win situation...

2023 Will Be Year OF Transformation: Army Chief

Army Chief General Manoj Pande today said 2023 will be the year of transformation. General Pande said women officers might be commissioned soon into the Indian Army's Corps of Artillery, as a proposal to that effect has been forwarded to the government for its assent. Without naming China, the Army Chief further said they have been able to prevent all attempts to change the status quo (on the LAC) in a robust manner.

Indian Army Chief Manoj Pande On China Threat: 'Deployment Along LAC Robust, Army Preparedness At High Level'

Speaking on the roadmap to transform the Indian army and take it to the path of modernisation, the army chief said, "We have taken a number of initiatives and identified five major pillars for transformation including restructuring, modernisation, human resource management, modifying processes, systems and function, and integration of three services." Further speaking on the issue whether the Galwan-like situation could erupt again, General Pande said, "Like any military, we have to be ready for all contingencies. We have adequate force levels and reserves to deal with any contingencies. To tackle such situation, we have our plans, we practice them, we rehearse them."

Land will remain a decisive force: Army chief on lessons from Russia

By India Today News Desk: Army chief General Manoj Pande on Friday said that the domain of war has changed and we need to be self-reliant to ensure smooth supply chains. However, land will remain a decisive domain in warfare, he added. Speaking on lessons from the Russia-Ukraine war, the Army chief said, "land will remain a decisive domain in warfare, especially in our case where we have contested land borders. The notion of victory will remain land centric in our context." Indian Army chief General Manoj Pande at the India Today Conclave 2023. (Photo: India Today) "The importance of our being reliant on inherent supply chains is a lesson from an operational point of view. Today it is a multi-domain operation and it is no longer kinetic warfare but also in the domains of cyber, space, information, and battles of narratives," General Pande added. He further said that as far as tactical issues are concerned, there are lessons in terms of operations by small teams, citizen warriors, and the relevance of larger platforms vis-a-vis smaller platforms like drones. "The importance for soldiers to be multi-skilled are some of the lessons which have great lessons," COAS said. FOLLOW INDIA TODAY CONCLAVE LIVE HERE

Post 1971 war, Pakistani POWs wished their officers were like Indian officers: Indian Army chief

Honouring the contributions of legendary officer Lt Gen PS Bhagat, Indian Army chief Gen Manoj Pande on Wednesday said the treatment of Pakistani prisoners of war post-1971 war was so good that they wished that their officers were as good as their Indian counterparts in ensuring the welfare of the troops. “After the 1971 Indo-Pak War, 90,000 Pakistani Prisoners of War were to be housed in camps in central command (with Lt Gen Bhagat as commander in chief). This entailed urgent construction of shelters, provision of amenities, putting the logistics in place, ensuring security arrangements and coordination,” Gen Pande said while addressing a memorial lecture. He said Lt Gen Bhagat ensured that every amenity that the POWs were entitled to, including canteen stores, postal facilities, and medical coverage, was made available in the true spirit of the Geneva Convention. He said in some cases, Lt Gen Bhagat even ordered an accommodation occupied by his own troops, vacated for the prisoners of war. “Hence, it was no surprise that Pakistani POWs had only praise for the way they were treated in India, and often remarked that they wished their officers were like Indian officers in the way they took care of their troops,” Gen Pande said. After the crushing defeat in the 1971 war, India had taken 90,000 Pakistan Army troops as prisoners after they surrendered before them. The defeat of the Pakistan Army led to the creation of Bangladesh, formerly East Pakistan. Lt Gen Niazi was the se...
