Hi Iam travelling to Nepal for Christmas. I got to know that Indian Credit/Debit cards will not work in Nepal and there is no option for me to use plastic money there. How much INR can i carry to Nepal(maximum limit). Is it necessary that i convert it into USD and then convert it to NPR when i land in Nepal? not necessarily true if your bank issued Credit or Debit card comes with Cirrus and Plus Interbank Int'l Network they work in most of the worldwide ATM locations including that of Nepal with such Interbank logo machines you don't need to decalre amount less than $5000 I don't think and by the way Indian Currencies more than 100 Rs denominations are prohibtied in Nepal don't ask me why - Edited: 9 years ago I actually think the max. amount you can carry through the airport/over the border is USD 10.000 (or equal to) without declaring. But the declaration is just a matter of proving that the money is legally earned and has been taxed according to the rules of your homecountry (to avoid money-laundry). All you need to bring is the reciept from when you cashed them in your bank. If you hold an international acknowledged credit-/debit card, you can use the ATM's in Nepal. • Is it safe to visit Nepal ? • What is the weather likely to be like in Nepal ? • When are the main trekking seasons in Nepal ? • What equipment do I need for trekking ? • Itinerary for the Everest Base Camp trek • Itinerary for Everest Base Camp via Gokyo • Itinerary for the Annapurna Circuit trek • Itin...

Declare new Indian currency legal in Nepal: NRB to RBI

Nepal has asked the RBI to declare newly circulated Indian currency notes of denominations higher than Rs 100 legal tender in the country, according to the media report on Sunday. The Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB), the country's central monetary authority, has written a letter on Friday to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), asking it to make Indian bank bills Rs 200, Rs 500 and Rs 2,000 legal tender in Nepal, The Himalayan Times reported. The NRB has asked India's central bank to issue a notification under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA), which will make Indian banknotes of denomination more than Rs 100 legal tender in Nepal and to provide the exchange facilities to get bills of such denominations, it said. The RBI has only allowed the circulation of Indian currency notes of Rs 100 and less in Nepal and provides exchange facilities for bills of these denomination. Before the demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 bank notes in November 2016, the RBI had issued a FEMA notification allowing Nepali citizens to carry Rs 25,000 worth of such bank notes. After the demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 Indian currency notes, circulation of new banknotes of denominations Rs 200, Rs 500 and Rs 2,000 was started by the Indian government. The RBI did not issue the notification for the newly circulated bank notes, making their use illegal in Nepal. "As the RBI was not allowing the circulation of the higher denomination Indian notes, we had to ban their use in Nepal to protect our ci...
