The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is all set to decide who will take away the media rights for the Indian Premier League (IPL) in an e-auction, for the first time in history on June 12. In 2017, Star Sports acquired the media rights for the tournament, which is considered to be the biggest sporting festival in India by paying a huge amount of over 16,000 crore rupees, and the media rights for the next five years (2023-27) are expected to fetch a much bigger amount. Having said that, here’s a look at the 10-key things we need to know about the much-anticipated e-auction. First e-auction for media rights in IPL’s history This will be the first time in the history of IPL, since the tournament’s establishment in 2008, that the media rights will be bid in an e-auction. Contrasting to the closed bidding process of 2017, the participants will have to decide whether or not to continue participating after a particular stage during the e-auction. A look at the E-auction schedule The e-auction for the IPL media rights will be held on June 12 in Mumbai. New Delhi:The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to hold the next Indian Premier League (IPL) media rights e-auction on Sunday. The much-awaited e-auction for media rights from 2023 to 2027 will be held for the first time since the establishment of the IPL. BCCI will begin the online bidding for the rights at 11 am IST on Sunday, treasurer Arun Singh Dhumal told Reuters. Results are expected later on Sunday. "IPL is the hottest property in cricket and it has just been expanded to a 10-team tournament, which means there will be more matches," Dhumal said. "All of it should reflect in the value of the new media rights, which we expect to be significantly higher than our previous deal." It is expected to be held for two days -June 12 and 13, reported PTI. However, there is no deadline as the BCCI has left the possibility of the e-auction extending into the next few days. The auction will continue until all bids have been placed. Which companies are in the fray? "Star has retained Indian TV rights of IPL for next five years while Viacom18 has got the digital rights. The combined per match value only from Indian TV and digital rights per game is 107.5 crore. With these bids, monopoly of one broadcaster in IPL ends," a senior BCCI functionary told PTI on the condition of anonymity. As per information received, Package A (Indian sub-continent TV Rights) for 410 IPL matches across five seasons from 2023 to 2027 has been sold for Rs 23,575 crore, which is effectively Rs 57.5 crore per game. However, it is the India sub-continent's digital rights that stole the thunder with Rs 50 crore per game being offered by Viacom18 (with Uday Shankar and James Murdoch's Lupa Systems) after Star as the winner of Package A challenged them. In a historic first, the sale earnings of the digital rights of the Indian Premier League (IPL) have overshadowed the earnings from the TV rights. The BCCI has BCCI secretary Jay Shah made the announcement via social media on Tuesday evening, the third day of the e-auction. While Disney Star retained their Indian sub-continent TV rights, the most sought-after India digital rights deal was acquired by the Reliance backed Viacom18, which also won the non-exclusive Package C. Package D with a base price of Rs 3 crore per game with overseas TV and Digital Rights on offer was sold to Viacom18 and Times Internet. The total earnings from IPL's digital rights (Package B and Package C) will now be Rs 23,775.16 crore (Rs 57.94 crore per match) while the revenue from the sale of the TV rights (Package A) is Rs 23,575 crore (Rs 57.5 crore per match).
