When we were auditioning for Jagan, we tested many boys. Some very interesting but we weren’t getting the right fit. The friend that he mentioned, she casually asked whether I want to test Babil. I didn’t know he was into acting. I knew he was studying films and wanted to be a cinematographer. When I saw the audition, in just two lines, I knew he was Jagan. It was the first time he was facing the camera and it could have been frightening. Babil was also coming from a sad place and yet kept his e...

Irrfan Khan death anniversary: When Babil recalled his 'baba' smiled and foretold his death

Irrfan Khan, actor who is known for delivering some of the best works in Bollywood as well as the Hollywood film industry took his last breath on April 29, 2020. The actor was suffering from a neuroendocrine tumor and fought a long battle. The actor’s wife Sutapa revealed how the actor was curious about death and the afterlife and his son Babil revealed that Irrfan foretold his death to him. In an extremely emotional interview with Film Companion, Sutapa recalled that before going to the hospital, Irrfan assured him that everything is fine and said, “He is telling me –‘nahi theek hai.’ Without any tantrum or anger. His face didn’t reveal any displeasure. I so clearly remember, sitting on the edge of the bed, he had become very weak. I made him wear his trousers, and combed his hair. He sat, held my hand, and got up. We hugged each other. There was not even a second of finality in it. No intuition of him was saying that I will not come back.” She further added, “For him, I don’t think he thought the time has come. He was reading books and planning films with Babil. He was planning every tree we will plant, which I am doing now. Everything. I don’t know, I sometimes feel I guilty that I had so much faith which I instilled in him that ‘kuch nahi hoga, main sambhal lungi’. He believed in me so much.” Irrfan Khan’s son Babil also recalled his last moments with his father and said, “I was there in the hospital in the last two days. He was losing consciousness. He just looked at ...

“It’s a rarity in our industry to find real friends who look out for you … With Anvita, Tripti, and Swastika, I felt there was truth to our relationship from the bottom of my heart … I was thrown into my first film and came on after having just lost my father … But Tripti — whom I had most of my scenes with — made it so comfortable. There was no pressure. She was so giving as an actor and you have to understand that she’s the lead of this film,” said Babil. The film, which opened to largely positive reviews, also enjoyed a thunderous showcase at the recent International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa and was hailed for its complex themes like the friction between mother and daughter, fear, insecurities and hatred. But this unhinged tale of a fragile musician and her delicate mind came alive because of their collective camaraderie and the intense/democratic workshops led by director Dutt. “Tripti was a very, very, very giving as an actor … She was shooting every day since 5am and I had a few days to shoot in the middle. But even though she was so tired or had cried the entire day for a scene, she stayed there for me. Even though it’s a dark film, I was surrounded by people who I knew will take care of me if I fall. And that emotion is so sacred,” said Babil. ‘Qala’, produced by actress Anushka Sharma's brother Karnesh,is a bold and nuanced departure from the usual saccharine mother-daughter relationships shown in Bollywood films where everything and everyone is hunky-...
