Ishant Sharma has extra responsibility and he is enjoying it: Delhi head coach ahead of SMAT 2022

India veteran Ishant Sharma is putting the hard yards in the nets and has wholeheartedly committed to the extra responsibility of mentoring the Delhi pacers in the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy beginning on Tuesday, team’s new head coach Abhay Sharma said on Monday. A stalwart of 105 Tests, the 34-year-old will be probably making one last attempt for an India comeback when the domestic season gets underway for the Delhi team with its T20 opener against Manipur in Jaipur on Tuesday. The build-up to the new season has not been ideal for Delhi who appointed former India U-19 and India A coach Sharma as head coach only 10 days ago. The squad for the premier T20 domestic event was announced on October 5 with IPL star Nitish Rana replacing Pradeep Sangwan as captain after a forgettable season in which seven time Ranji champion could not past the league stage of all three domestic tournaments. Umran Malik’s Australia tour delayed due to visa issues, to play in J&K’s first Syed Mushtaq match Head coach Sharma is aware of the challenges at hand and the 53-year-old told PTI that he and the players are up for it. “The preparation time was less but somehow we have created a very good environment. I have had one on ones with all the players and they are looking forward to make an impact right from the word go. “We had a team bonding session yesterday and everyone participated including the senior players (Ishant, Nitish, Navdeep Saini). As professionals, they know their game and bodies b...

Ishant Sharma Profile

With a physique and attitude that is reminiscent of a young Javagal Srinath, Ishant Sharma shot into prominence during the 2007-08 Test series in Australia. Standing at 6'4", his rhythmic, high-arm action allowed him to bowl at around 140 kph. For one who started serious cricket at 14, his rise was rapid and he made his Ranji Trophy debut at 18. An injury to Munaf Patel provided him an opening during India's tour of Bangladesh in May 2007 but it was in Australia where he caught the attention, prompting Steve Waugh to call him the next best thing in Indian cricket. He showed he could move the ball both ways and his probing spell in the second innings in Perth, where he set-up Ricky Ponting, is the stuff of folklore. He continued to impress in the one-day series, clocking more than 150kph once, and ended as India's highest wicket-taker in the triumphant campaign. The glory days continued through his debut season, with a notable performance against South Africa, followed by 15 wickets in four Tests in the succesful home series against Australia in 2008, and a couple of strong shows in Sri Lanka in ODIs. By now Ishant was clearly Zaheer Khan's deputy in the Indian seam arsenal, but things have gone seriously wrong since. Some have blamed it on his being over-bowled, particularly on flat tracks in the IPL, while others point to a malaise that has afflicted all of India's new crop of fast bowlers. The fact remains that Ishant lost the most crucial aspect of his bowling - his pac...

Ishant Sharma on 'workload': 'It's a new term. Never saw it during my stint'

While the Indian cricket team continues to emphasise more towards workload management, the one cricketer who is not fond of the practice is veteran pacer Ishant Sharma has his reservations about the term 'workload' for cricketers. (Getty) "The only thing I would say right now is: 'Do not think too much about the workload'. That's a new term that's come up in recent times, especially for fast bowlers. I never saw something like that during my international stint. When I started playing, my coach was an old-fashioned coach who would give me a ball in hand at 1 o'clock in the afternoon and we would go on till the sunset. That's how I could bowl long spells when I made my debut in Ranji Trophy and later on for India. If you want to improve, the only thing you can do is to keep bowling," Ishant told Sportstar. Jasprit Bumrah sustained a stress fracture earlier this year prior to the Asia Cup, and although he returned to play a couple of T20Is, the India pacer went down again with the injury reoccurring and forcing him out of the T20 World Cup. Mohammed Shami was the second casualty as the India quick injured his shoulder in the lead up to the Bangladesh ODIs and was ruled out for an indefinite period of time. The worst of the lot is Deepak Chahar, who pulled his hamstring – his third injury of the year – and is back on the shelf again. Weighing in on the same, Ishant feels the number of breaks that are offered to bowlers are too much and that this entire theory needs to be reco...
