Text on the flag reading, 'No God, but Allah, and Muhammad is Allah's Messenger,' are the words contained on the flag of the Prophet Muhammad that he carried into battle and handed to generations of bearers. The Islamic State provides evidence and legitimacy for this banner from Islamic scholars, and goes into detail regarding opinions of the flag's material, title, and significance. The Taliban intends to replace the Afghan national flag with their white banner bearing the Shahada “La ilah ila Allah, Mohammad rasoul Allah” (There is no god but God and Muhammad is God’s messenger) after retaking the country on Sunday. The removal of the Afghan flag has triggered protests in at least two Afghan cities, with at least three people killed in the eastern city of Jalalabad during an anti-Taliban protest. In a video that went viral on social media, protesters in Jalalabad tried to place the government flag on a crowded street’s pedestrian bridge after it was replaced with the Taliban banner. This is not the first time Afghanistan’s flag has changed. Since the Emirate of Afghanistan became fully independent from Britain more than 100 years ago, its flag has changed at least 18 times. Here’s the story of how Afghanistan’s flag has evolved over the past 100 years. 1901-1919 Habibullah Khan rules the Emirate of Afghanistan, a British protectorate. He modifies his father’s solid black flag with a seal showing a mosque above two crossed swords, encircled by a wreath. 1921 The Emirate of Afghanistan becomes fully independent from Britain under Prince Amanullah Khan. The mosque at the centre of the seal is a recurring symbol, as are the crossed swords. Amanullah replaces the wreath with a radiating octagram and makes the swords smaller. 1926 King Amanullah declares the Kingdom of Afghanistan in 1926. The flag and emblem change. The octagram is replaced with a wreath,...

Hamtramck City Council bans Pride flag from city property

Hamtramck officials will remove the Pride flag from city property after the city council voted to ban it. The all-Muslim Hamtramck City Council on Tuesday banned LGBTQ+ Pride flags from being flown on all city properties, drawing criticism that the diverse city chose bigotry over inclusivity. The so-called "neutrality flag resolution" also prohibits the display of religious, ethnic, racial, and political flags and states that the city won’t provide “special treatment to any group.” The unanimous vote followed more than three hours of public comments and months of impassioned debate. Dozens of supporters and opponents crowded into the council chambers and hallway at City Hall to speak out. “I am a Lebanese person, and I support the American flag,” Hassan Aoun, an activist based in Dearborn, said. “We are not going to sit here and tolerate you guys coming in here and saying, ‘Oh, it’s Pride Month.’ If you’re gay, no problem. Be gay by yourself. Don’t sit here and throw it down my throat or anyone’s throat.” But supporters of the flag criticized the council for invoking religion to justify a hateful action. “I think the elephant in the room – the thing we all see and are not talking about – is that homosexuality is a sin, and I think that’s what’s weighing on people,” resident Russ Gordon said. “That is an inappropriate reason for banning this flag. … It may be a sin, but it’s a reality, and a lot of gay people live in this city, and that flag represents them. It allows them ...
