Issy Wong: Player profile

DOB: May 15, 2002 Role: Right-hand bat, right-arm fast-medium Issy Wong burst onto the scene as a teenage pace-bowling sensation and hopes to become the first English woman to clock 80mph. She was among the youngest players to feature in the Kia Super League, representing Southern Vipers in 2019, and has been among the first names on the teamsheet for Sparks since 2020, taking 29 wickets in all formats for the club. A new-ball specialist, she has formed dangerous partnerships with Emily Arlott and Grace Potts over the past few years. However, she's not just a blistering quick but also a dynamic pinch hitter – in 2022, she scored 106 runs at a strike rate of 126.19 in the Charlotte Edwards Cup. Wong is one of the hottest prospects in world cricket, debuting for England in all formats in 2022 and earning contracts in The Hundred, WBBL and, most recently, the WPL. In the latter competition, Wong lifted the title with Mumbai Indians in March 2023, scoring 61 runs (132.60 strike rate) and taking 15 wickets, including a hat-trick in the eliminator. Wong's need for speed is also a feature of her off-field life, with the young gun once solving a Rubik's Cube live on Sky Sports in just 33 seconds. She's often heard commentating on cricket and enjoys football and basketball in her spare time, supporting Liverpool and Golden State Warriors.

Issy Wong: Bowling 80mph in women's cricket will 'be normal', says England fast bowler

No woman in history has reached such speed before. Wong, who is regarded as one of the fastest bowlers in the women's game, took 3-36 on her international white-ball debut as England beat South Africa by 114 runs in the second one-day international in Bristol. "I got asked if I thought it was possible and I said yes, absolutely," said Wong. "I go back to the four-minute mile, nobody had ever done it and they thought your lungs would explode, and then Roger Bannister did it. "And in the following year about four or five people did it as well because they knew it was possible." The 20-year-old impressed with her extra pace on a flat pitch, bowling with aggression and hostility to provide England's attack with an added spark. While she admits she does not think about the speed gun when she is bowling, Wong is confident breaking the 80mph barrier is definitely achievable. "Someone is going to get there and it will be normal I guess. It could be anyone. If you've got the wind behind you and you are running downhill and there's a bit of dew about it might help," she told Sky Sports. On Friday, the wicket of big hitter Chloe Tryon, who made 88 in the first ODI, demonstrated Wong's point of difference with the ball as a fast, well-directed bouncer was edged through to wicketkeeper Amy Jones. "The message has definitely been if I back myself to execute my short ball, then they back me 100%," Wong said. England lead the multi-format series 6-2, with the third and final ODI taking pl...

Issy Wong on cricket, climate change and inspiring the next generation

Aged just 20, Issy Wong has been capped in all formats by England One-day series: England v India Dates: 18, 21 & 24 September Venues: Hove, Canterbury & Lord's Coverage: Live text with in-play clips on the BBC Sport website and app, live commentary on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra and BBC Sounds and highlights on the BBC iPlayer There is a lot to know about Issy Wong. Her grandfather is Chinese and her uncles played cricket for Hong Kong. Her great-grandmother won a medal spying for the British. She is a national champion at Eton Fives (a variation of handball) and was rejected for a sports scholarship at Uppingham School for "lacking speed and agility, and not being good enough at cricket". Wong can complete a Rubik's Cube in about 30 seconds, but her record is 16. She is a committed Liverpool fan and flew back from Paris the Sunday after the Champions League final in order to play for Central Sparks later that day. It says much about the growth of women's cricket that pretty much all of this information was in the public domain before Wong made her England bow in the Test against South Africa in June. With a fascinating back story, unique look and fun-loving approach to the game - she bowls rockets and hits the ball hard - the 20-year-old was probably the highest-profile female England debutant of all time. Wong, though, is honest enough to admit there is a big difference between "Wongy" the cricketer and Issy the person. "In my head, it feels like two personalities," she te...
