Wranglers all

Apparently there have been at least four more Indian Wranglers, apart from Dr. S.R. U Savoor ( Paranjpye was the first Indian to be awarded the title ‘Senior Wrangler.’ That was in 1899. He returned to head the Mathematics Department of Fergusson College, Poona, and then served as its Principal from 1906-26. He then successively became Vice-Chancellor of Bombay and Lucknow Universities. He was knighted in 1942, and from 1944 to 1947, served as India’s High Commissioner in Australia. His daughter Shakuntala received the Padma Bhushan for her work in spreading the family planning gospel and his grand-daughter Sai received it for her work as a film director and scriptwriter. Sir Raghunath’s connection with Madras was his founding of the Indian Rationalist Association here in 1949. He remained its president for many years. Reader R. Seshadri adds a note on the title of ‘Senior Wrangler’ which was first awarded in 1842 to the topper among those getting First Class Honours in undergraduate Mathematics at Cambridge. The title was announced in public until 1909; thereafter, no identities were officially revealed. But the Examiner would, while reading out the First Class Honours list at the Convocation, tip his headgear when announcing the topper’s name. So tipped was Jayant Narlikar in 1959. Is he the second Indian Senior Wrangler? To be called Senior Wrangler was synonymous with “academic supremacy,” mathematics being considered “the most challenging of all subjects,” it has been...

Explained: What it means to have Jayant Narlikar as chair of Marathi Sahitya Sammelan

Noted astrophysicist, science writer and academic Dr Jayant Narlikar has been named as the What is the importance of this literary meet in the Marathi literary world and what it means to have a world-renowned scientist as its chair. What is the Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Sahitya Sammelan The first Akhil Bhartiya Marathi Sahitya Sammelan dates back to 1878, when social reformer, writer and judge Mahadev Govind Ranade chaired the literary conference. Since then, it has remained the central platform for literary discourse, debates, expression and literary criticism in Marathi language. While the annual meet itself is an affair of three days, the president of the sammelan remains on the position for a year and steers the discussions about the key issues in Marathi literature in that period. However, there have been several years in between that the meet was not organised. In fact, since its inception in 1878 till early 1960s, the meet was held in an unstructured manner with Marathi literary bodies and academic institutions within and outside Maharashtra organising it. In early 1960s, Yashwantrao Chavan, then Maharashtra Chief Minister and later Union Minister, made efforts to bring together various Marathi literary bodies under the leadership of historian Datto Vaman Potdar. What took shape was the Akhil Bhartiya Marathi Sahitya Mahamandal as an umbrella body, which now comprises representatives of the four main Marathi literary bodies from Vidarbha, Marathwada, From 1965 till tw...

(Photo courtesy: Narlikar family) Jayant Narlikar, professor emeritus at the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA) and one of the most famous residents of the city, turned 80 on Thursday. Currently in the United States with his family, Narlikar, the founder-director of IUCAA, said there was still a lot of work that he wanted to do, if his body and mind cooperated. In a telephonic interview with The Indian Express, Narlikar said he was deeply concerned about the fact that despite excellent work at many laboratories in the country, no scientist from India had won a Nobel Prize since 1930, when it was awarded to physicist C V Raman. “This is a reason to worry as plenty of good work is taking place at some of the laboratories in India. There should be some effort to publicise it internationally,” Narlikar said. “We do not seem to be pushing our work at the international level as much as we should”. Narlikar, who did pioneering research in astronomy and cosmology, including work on the origins of the universe, said India had plenty of opportunities t...

President of the ASI, Prof. Dipankar Banerjee handed over the award announced earlier to Prof. Narlikar and felicitated him Prof. Banerjee says, both Prof. Swarup and Prof. Narlikar remained deeply committed to the growth of Astronomy and Astrophysics in the country by building exemplary institutions and devoting enormous efforts towards training the younger generations The most befitting recipient of the very first ASI Govind Swarup Lifetime Achievement award is Prof. Jayant V. Narlikar, an astronomer par-excellence, the founding director of IUCAA, Pune and also a past President of the ASI. Though the award was announced earlier this year at the 41st meeting of the ASI held at IIT Indore, Prof. Narlikar was unable to travel to receive it. The President of the ASI, Prof. Dipankar Banerjee, was in Pune to personally hand over the award to Prof. Narlikar and felicitate him. On this occasion, Prof. Banerjee said, “Though their domains of work differed widely, both Prof. Swarup and Prof. Narlikar remained deeply committed to the growth of Astronomy and Astrophysics in the country by building exemplary institutions and devoting enormous efforts towards training the younger generations. They both continue to serve as illustrious role models for generations to come. It is an honour for me to hand over the award to our beloved teacher, Jayant.” Colleagues at NCRA also convey their congratulations to Prof. Narlikar and are pleased that the award, named after their founder, has been...
