Jehanabad jail break escapee arrested

An active member of outlawed Ranvir Sena, a private militia of upper caste landlords, Chandan Sharma was arrested on Friday, police said. HT Image Sharma had escaped from Jehanabad sub-jail during last year Naxalites attack on the jail. He was arrested from Sabdalpur village of Jehanabad district. Police said altogether 372 inmates had escaped from Jehanabad jail during Naxalites attack on November 13 last year. While 205 prisoners surrendered, 52 prisoners were arrested and 105 inmates were still at large, police said.

Naxalite held for Jehanabad jailbreak

Ranchi, Dec. 16: Latehar police today claimed to have arrested one of the conspirators behind Jehanabad jailbreak case today. Naveen Ji alias Chotu Das alias Satish Ji was arrested at the Sartand forest, around 120km from the city. Latehar superintendent of police, Ravikant Dhan, said the breakthrough came about this morning when the extremist was heading towards Kurjrum on a bike to work for the Kisan Bachao Rally. He was caught with pamphlets and Naxalite literature. “Our operation started on December 14. Our team had intercepted a motorbike this morning on a tip-off and after a brief inquiry it was learnt that the pillion rider was a sub-zonal commander of the rebel group. The team also recovered six detonators and Rs 3,100, besides Naxalite literature. Later, we identified him as Naveen Ji,” Dhan said. The SP further said that the sub-zonal commander was transferred about three months ago and during his presence in Bihar had participated in several encounters with the police and had also thrown challenges to police officials at Chouparan, Wasirganj and Mohanpur areas. “He is very close to Ajay Kanu, who masterminded the Jehanabad jailbreak and is in custody at present,” he added. Jailed DU grad pens book on Jehanabad jailbreak

PATNA: How did the The author, Amar Nath Jha, is not a Maoist. A native of Madhubani district, this 33-year-old Delhi University graduate is in fact serving a life term in a case of kidnapping and murder of a junior student. “Though `Red Action: The Inside Story of Naxalites’ offers a fictionalised account of the incident, it is based on facts gathered in course of my interaction with top Maoist leaders inside the jail,” he says. The book also gives a detailed account of how a small group of Maoists carried out a recce of the Jehanabad town to provide inputs to the cadres who were undergoing a special training in the Saranda forests to carry out the jailbreak operation. They used a coded system of words. “The jail was code-named Krishna temple, Police Lines Hanuman temple and CRPF camp was called the small Hanuman temple in their parlance,” the book says and adds the mission itself was referred to as `establishment of idols’. “I wanted to exhibit my creativity in the best possible way despite limitations of the life inside a jail. And the inputs from Maoist inmates helped me get near the truth about the jailbreak and other aspects of Naxal movement in the country,” Jha told TOI. IB warns of jailbreak plot being hatched at Bihar’s Beur prison, security stepped up

An alert by the Intelligence Bureau has sent the Beur jail administration near Patna in a tizzy. The IB has warned that some prisoners in the jail might be planning a major jailbreak. Following the input, the Bihar Police on Wednesday night stepped up security around the jail and launched search operations inside the premises. What adds to the worries of the police administration in the state is the fact that several dreaded criminals and terrorists are lodged inside Beur jail. Terrorists who carried out serial blasts at Patna’s Gandhi Maidan in 2013 are also inside the prison. Notably, a Naxalite named Ajay Kanu, who is the prime accused in infamous Jehanabad jail break case of 2005, is also serving a sentence inside the Beur jail. The Jehanabad jail break was planned from inside the prison and carried out successfully on November 13, 2005. Apart from Kanu, several terrorists such as Umar Siddiqui, Azharuddin, Imtiaz Ansari, Ahmed Hussain, Fakhruddin Ahmed, Feroz Alam, Noman Ansari, Iftekhar Alam, Haidar Ali and Mujibullah. The threat of Beur jailbreak reminds of the Jehanabad jailbreak incident wherein Naxals had planned and carried out an attack to make Kanu escape from the prison. He was wanted by police departments of several states, including Bihar, Jharkhand, Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. Having a bounty of Rs 5 lakh on his head, Kanu was arrested more than a decade back while he was on his way from Dhanbad to Kolkata.

Jehanabad jailbreak mastermind arrested

An Intelligence Bureau (IB) team arrived from New Delhi on Saturday to interrogate Ajay Kanu alias Ravi, the alleged mastermind behind Jehanabad jailbreak incident. Kanu was arrested on Friday. The team headed by an SP-rank officer visited the Bureau's office in Danapur area and quizzed Kanu for several hours. HT Image The Bihar police officials have not yet been informed about Kanu's arrest. "Since he is wanted by the police of five states, including Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and Orissa, we are trying to elicit information about extremist operation from him," said a senior IB official on condition of anonymity. The official said Kanu is a hard nut to crack. "Most of the time, he tried to divert the attention of the interrogators by disclosing irrelevant things about the organisational set up of the outfit," he said. The arrested CPI (Maoist) leader revealed to the IB officials how the Jehanabad operation was planned from inside the prison and carried out successfully on November 13, 2005. Kanu, who is carrying a reward of Rs 5 lakh on his head, fell into police net when he along with two women activists was on way to Kolkata from Dhanbad in Jharkhand. Sources said that he boarded the train at Gomo railway station under Dhanbad railway division and was taken into custody midway. The arrest of Kanu is being viewed as a major setback to the outfit. Bihar: Maoist accused of Jehanabad jailbreak held

Eleven Maoists, including the prime accused of the Jehanabad jail-break incident, were arrested in Bihar's Gaya district during combing operations early on Monday morning, police sources said. The police arrested 11 Maoists including the elusive Sanjay Yadav, who was involved in Jehanabad jail-break in November 2005, from a village under Atri police station in Gaya. Police sources in Gaya told rediff.com over phone that, the Maoists were arrested when they gathered in a village to 'chalk out their plan for next attack.' "After an intelligence report, a police team raided the village and arrested the Maoists, along with country-made pistols, guns and ammunition" a police official said. Gaya and its neighbouring districts of Aurangabad, Jehanabad and Arwal are regarded as a stronghold of the Maoists. In rural Bihar, complaints of extortion by the rebels during construction and development work are common, and often lead to projects being stalled.
