Jejuri Temple

Jejuri Temple is located in the Jejuri town, which lies to the southeast of the Pune city of Maharashtra. The town is known for being the venue of one of the revered temples in the state, known as the Khandobachi Jejuri. The temple is dedicated to Khandoba, also known as Mhalsakant or Malhari Martand. Khandoba is regarded as the 'God of Jejuri' and is held in great reverence by the Dhangars, one of the oldest tribes in India. Jejuri Temple is situated atop a small hill and because of this height; one has to climb a series of almost 200 steps to reach the sanctum sanctorum. Since the climb is not too difficult and offers amazing views of Saswad and Dive Ghat, one doesn't even come to know when the 200 steps come to an end. Jejuri Khandoba Temple can be easily divided into two separate parts - the Mandap and Gabhara. The idol of Shri Khandoba enshrined inside the temple is simply beautiful. There are three weapons housed in Jejuri Temple, a sword, a damaru and a paral. They are very exquisite and also have historical importance attached to them. A Sword Competition is held every year at the temple, on the occasion of Dusshera. The one who lifts the sword of the temple high up, for the maximum time, is declared the winner. They are a group of shepherds who are extremely dedicated to Khandoba (Lord Shiva) because he wed Ganai, a shepherd’s daughter. After getting married, couples go to the shrine where they must make an offering to the deity while standing next to one another. It is said that to defeat the demons Mani and Malla, Lord Shiva appeared as Khandoba. Khandoba’s martial emblem is called Divti. It resembles a dagger but also functions as a lamp. The dagger represents light slaying darkness when it is lit up. History and architecture of the Jejuri Khandoba Temple In the year 1608 AD, the temple was first built. Ragho Mambaji, a Maratha chief, finished the Sabhamandapa and other components in 1637 AD. The shepherd groups who revere Khandoba as their family deity have built deepmalas, cloisters, nagarhanas, enhanced flight of steps, and other structures over the years. Many structures have been added by those whose desires have been granted. Each extension to the old temple followed the style of Maratha architecture. Around each c...

Locals vs outsiders’ row hits Jejuri Temple

PUNE: Locals during protest after Charity Commissioner recently reconstituted the Temple trust where 80 percent trustees appointed are outsiders in Jejuri. (HT PHOTO) As a majority of the newly-appointed trustees on the Jejuri Temple Trust are not residents of Jejuri village, the locals have come out in strong protest against the decision claiming that it is politically motivated and that these ‘outsiders’ do not know anything about the traditions, rituals, yatras and events of the temple. The locals have submitted a letter to the authorities, threatening to escalate the agitation and undertake an indefinite hunger strike if the newly-constituted trust is not dissolved and reconstituted. The former trustees on the ‘Shri Martand Dev Sansthan Temple Trust’ completed their tenure in December last year after which the process of appointment of new trustees was started. Over 500 applications were received out of which, 95 applications were rejected while 350 candidates were interviewed. The list was whittled down to seven successful candidates who were appointed as trustees of the Jejuri Temple on May 19. The newly-formed trust comprises five members who do not reside in Jejuri, which is about 50 kilometres from Pune; one member who resides nine kilometres away from Jejuri; and only one who resides in Jejuri. That most of the trustees are not from Jejuri has irked the villagers of Jejuri, who have been protesting for the past five days against the decision taken by the joint ch...
