Iranian Designer Jila Saber on Her Political Cannes Dress

Amid the sea of glamorous gowns at the premiere of Ken Loach’s The Old Oak during the 76th annual Cannes Film Festival last week, one stood out from the pack. Iranian model Mahlagha Jaberi wore a Jila Atelier design that featured a halter-style neckline shaped into a golden noose. It was an intentional political statement that instantly went viral. “We wanted to make a fashion statement to observe the glamour of Cannes, but more importantly, to bring media attention to the wrongful executions of Iranian people,” wrote Jaberi on Instagram. The death penalty is currently being used by Iranian officials as a means to maintain power and instill fear in anti-regime protestors. Turning Up the Heat in Quantum Materials

Quantum materials, a fascinating class of materials that harness the power of quantum mechanics, are revolutionizing modern science and technology. Quantum materials often possess exotic states of matter, such as superconductivity or magnetic ordering, that defy conventional understanding and can be manipulated for various technological applications. To further enhance and manipulate the intriguing characteristics of quantum materials, researchers leverage nanostructuring—the ability to precisely control the geometry on the atomic scale. Specifically, nanostructuring provides the ability to manipulate and fine-tune the electrical and thermal properties of quantum and other materials. This can result, for example, in designer structures that conduct current very well, but impede heat transport. These structures can help recapture and utilize waste heat in electronics, buildings, and vehicles—enhancing their efficiency and, thereby, reducing power consumption. A related critical challenge for a broad range of nanotechnologies is the need for more efficient cooling, so that the nano devices do not overheat during operation. June 08, 2023 | JILA graduate student Alexander Aeppli is one of a team of researchers working on the world’s most precise clocks. In the laboratory of JILA and NIST Fellow Jun Ye, Aeppli focuses on improving the strontium atomic clock using powerful ultrastable lasers. “The laser drives an electronic transition in strontium,” Aeppli explained. “And we want to make sure the transition within the strontium is exact.” Before the transition occurs, the strontium atoms are trapped within an optical lattice inside the clock. Once trapped, the strontium atoms can transition when exposed to a particular color (or frequency) of light, and the researchers, like Aeppli, measure this transition frequency as a form of timekeeping. The frequency can then be used as the precise standard of time worldwide. The JILA Physics Frontier Center (JILA PFC) brings together 20 investigators in collaboration to share goals, ideas, expertise and technology in their aim to realize precise measurement, innovative manipulation, and harvesting ever-more intriguing meaning, all in the world of complex quantum systems. Tracing water and organics in the Solar System using ground

Abstract: Primitive asteroids (PAs) are the remaining building blocks of our Solar System (SS) study their composition, location and evolution will help us understanding how different materials travel along the Solar System and how they appeared on Earth. They are characterized by dark surfaces (albedo < 10%) dominated by carbon compounds. Their reflectance spectra are similar to those of carbonaceous chondrites (CCs), the most pristine meteorites in our records, that are abundant in hydrated minerals and organics. PAs present rather featureless spectra in visible and near-infrared wavelengths (from 0.5 to 2.5 µm). The most diagnostic and reliable region to study hydrated mineralogies and organics is the 3-µm region hardly accessible from Earth due to atmospheric absorption. However, another shallow feature in visible wavelengths, around 0.7 µm, is related to the Fe2+ Fe3+ iron transition in hydrated mineralogies. Furthermore, there is a strong absorption in the UV that is proposed to be related also with an electronic iron transition in hydrated minerals. We have observed using different ground-based telescopes ~100 objects with a wavelength coverage enough to study the band at 0.7 microns together with the beginning of the UV absorption. In the archive we found some spectra taken with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) which allow us to study the beginning of the UV absorption for some asteroids.
