Jitesh Sharma's contribution with the bat cannot be undermined: Sunil Gavaskar lauds PBKS wicketkeeper

By India Today Sports Desk: Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar hailed Punjab Kings (PBKS) wicketkeeper Jitesh Sharma for his fantastic batting performances in the ongoing season of IPL. Sharma has been a standout performer for PBKS this season with 260 runs in 11 innings at a strike rate of 160.49. Fans should be aware that Sharma bats lower down the order for the Kings in the IPL. | Gavaskar emphasised how Sharma's cameos in the slog overs end up making a significant difference in the game. Jitesh began his IPL career with the Mumbai Indians in 2016, but it is at PBKS that he has found his footing over the last two seasons, with his lower-order performances catching the eye in IPL 2023. Jitesh was called up to the Indian team earlier this year for the series against Sri Lanka, but he didn't play in any of the games. Suresh Raina stated that the selectors would take another look at him and that we would see a lot more of him in the future. "Jitesh Sharma has been contributing well for PBKS, he's been striking the ball at a good rate at the back end of the innings. He's giving Punjab just the push and momentum toward the last 4/5 overs, which they haven't had in the previous years. So his contribution with the bat cannot be undermined," Gavaskar said while speaking on Star Sports' show Cricket Live. "Last year too, Jitesh had put in decent performances. He was included in the Indian squad too (during the home T20Is against Sri Lanka back in January) but did not get an opp...

Ind vs WI: Yashasvi Jaiswal, Jitesh Sharma and Rinku Singh likely to make India debut, details inside

Ind vs WI: Team India is all set to play its next series against West Indies from July 12. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has also announced the schedule for India's tour of the West Indies. A total of eight matches will be played in the series which will last for a month. In the new schedule of Team India, some players, who performed fiercely in IPL 2023, are likely to make their debut. Yashasvi Jaiswal, Jitesh Sharma and Rinku Singh are in contention to replace some existing players in Team India. India will have a month-long tour of West Indies where they would start with two Test matches starting July 12, followed by three ODIs and five T20Is. While another WTC final defeat will hurt the team, there is a strong feeling that the Shiv Sunder Das-led selection committee and head coach Rahul Dravid will be looking at some options going into the next WTC cycle, which starts with the series in the Caribbean. The two weak links as of now seem to be Pujara and Umesh, who haven't been up to the mark for a long time. "You need to strike a balance. Selection is a process of elimination but you need that blend of youth and experience. The idea should be long-term and you have to look at two- year cycle now. "I believe Yashasvi Jaiswal is ready for international cricket. He has scored double hundreds in Ranji, Irani and Duleep Trophy. Looks solid in terms of temperament and could be groomed while being given enough chances to grow," former national selector Devang...

Jitesh Sharma

What was the IPL like for you? I see myself improving and learning. This was only my second time in the IPL, which is a high-pressure tournament. Plus, the team had better expectations from me this time after my performance last year. So I tried to carry forward that mindset. This IPL was a good learning experience. • Jitesh Sharma didn't want a career in cricket but he got one anyway • Can high-impact Jitesh Sharma be the ace in India's T20 deck? • Bowlers a letdown as Punjab Kings miss out on playoffs yet again • Raza on his IPL experience: 'If there is no cricket from tomorrow, I'd say I have ticked all the boxes' • IPL 2023 takeaways: Runs get quicker and bigger as Impact Players have their say What did the two of you say to each other during that partnership? Our communication was clear: if the ball is in your radar, go for the big hits. But we had also decided that we would first face a few deliveries [to settle down] before going all out. There was quite some time left when we got together [in the 12th over], so we could afford to just have a look at any new bowler who was coming in. Liam had told me that initially my role would be to give him the strike. But when I got a free hit and hit Jofra Archer for a four, I had a very good feeling about bat on ball with that shot. Then I hit a few more boundaries and then Liam said that from there on, both of us would go for the big hits and try to score as much as we could. We hardly even talk to each other otherwise! A lot...

Jitesh Sharma: 'I Used To Hit 400 Sixes In A Day'

Jitesh Sharma was one of the few positives in an otherwise disappointing campaign for the Punjab Kings in IPL 2023. The wicketkeeper-batter, who plays for Vidarbha in domestic cricket, made the pundits and spectators take notice with some quickfire knocks in the final overs. Playing just his second IPL season, Jitesh scored 309 runs in 14 games at a strike rate of 156, hitting 21 sixes and 22 fours. He displayed his brute force to the hilt with match-defining cameos -- blasting 25 from seven balls against the Mumbai Indians, including four sixes, 49 not out from 27 balls against the same opponents, 41 from 27 balls against the Royal Challengers Bangalore, 24 from 10 balls against the Lucknow Super Giants, 44 from 28 balls against the Rajasthan Royal. The 29-year-old right-hander has made a name for himself as a lower order finisher in T20 cricket, with 2,096 runs overall at a strike rate of 149. His exploits haven't got unnoticed and earlier this year he was called up to the Indian T20 team for the home series against Sri Lanka when Sanju Samson was ruled out with injury. Although he didn't get a game it showed he was in the selectors' radar. In IPL 2023, courtesy his attacking knocks, he caught the attention of Virender Sehwag, Ravi Shastri and Sunil Gavaskar who believe he can be a handy option for India as the finisher in T20 cricket. After returning home after a hectic IPL season Jitesh spoke to Harish Kotian about why T20 cricket comes naturally to him. You are back h...
