Chamoli district magistrate Himanshu Khurana has said that cracks have appeared in about 610 of the town’s 4,500 buildings, and roads have sunk in many places. Officials said fresh cracks developed on Sunday in two roads and 12 buildings, including the tehsil office of Joshimath. A floor of the office sank, forcing its closure. Jyotirmath, founded in AD 820, is one of four seats of Shankaracharyas that Adi Shankara had established and is one of the most important centres of pilgrimage for Hindus. The other seats are the Sringeri Sarada Pitham in Karnataka, Dwaraka Sarada Peetham in Gujarat and Puri Govardhan Pitham in Odisha. Joshimath: Cracks hit enlightenment spot of Shankaracharya

DEHRADUN: The premises of the Jyotireshwar Mahadev temple in Joshimath, housing the ancient 'kalpavriksha' (mulberry tree) under which Adi Shankaracharya is believed to have spent five years at the age of 11 before attaining enlightenment, has also developed cracks. According to local belief, the renowned ancient scholar saw a beam of light (jyoti) while meditating under the tree which resulted in him giving the place the name, Jyotirmath (which later became Joshimath in local usage). 'Shedding of leaves is nothing unusual' Meanwhile, concerned at cracks developing at the historic site, members of the Shri Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee (BKTC) which administers this temple, the Badrinath and Kedarnath shrines along with other temples in the region, inspected the place a few days ago. The temple's priest, Mahimanand Uniyal, told TOI on Sunday: "The tree and the temple hold great cultural and religious significance. It is worrying that cracks have developed in the area. On our request, the BKTC team examined the premises." The site is located in ward five -- part of Manohar Bagh area of Joshimath Municipal Council -- where several houses have developed cracks and fissures. Uttarakhand government's latest data says that 863 structures have developed cracks in the past 30 days, out of which 502 are 'major'. The government data, till Saturday, showed that maximum houses with cracks were in Ravigram (161), followed by Gandhinagar (156) and Singdhar ward (151). Speaking on ...

The Ancient Prophecy of Shankaracharya About Joshimath and the Self Manifesting Deity at Bhavishya Badri

In the last few days there have been many news reports of cracks appearing on roads and buildings at Joshimath near to Badrinath. Even the ancient Narasimha temple established by Adi Shankaracharya is said to be cracking. Seeing these news reports I thought to repost what I wrote in 2013 about the prophecy of the Joshimath Narasimha deity breaking and Bhavishya Badri (the “future Badrinath”) manifesting. These were told to me by sadhus who stayed at Tapovan and Bhavishya Badri back in 2008. Here is one of many recent news articles highlighting the cracks appearing in buildings throughout Joshimath: Hundred of houses and buildings have begun developing cracks throughout the city. Even the crystal shivalinga in one of the local temples has cracked. A crystal shivalinga at Joshimath has cracked. Seeing these news articles, I was immediately reminded of the stories told to me by sadhus who stayed at Tapovan and Bhavishya Badri back in 2008. These are ancient prophecies that have been handed down from sadhu to sadhu for thousands of years from the time of Adi Shankaracharya. Adi Shankaracharya A few years prior to meeting these sadhus at Bhavishya Badri we had been advised to visit Tapovan by a sadhu we met in Badrinath, named Swami Balakrishna Giri. He was originally from Kerala but had been living as a sadhu in the Himalayas for 40 or 50 years at this point. This was perhaps in 2003 or 2004, though I don’t remember the exact date. The story of meeting him and what he told us ...

Uttarakhand's Joshimath land subsidence: Jyotish Peeth Shankaracharya seeks relief package – ThePrint – ANIFeed

Haridwar (Uttarakhand) [India], January 7 (ANI): Jyotish Peeth Shankaracharya Swami Avimuktateshwaranand Saraswati in Uttarakhand alleged on Friday that the “planned destruction of Himalayan regions” in the name of development is the cause behind land subsidence in Joshimath. “It is the result of the planned destruction of Himalayan regions in the name of development. Today, the lives of thousands of people in Joshimath, which is the main centre of Indian culture, is in danger,” Shankaracharya said demanding a one-time relief package from the Uttarakhand government along with the safety of the lives and property of the families in danger. Shankaracharya is a common term used for the heads of monasteries called Math in the Advaita Vedanta of Hindu tradition. He further emphasised that due to this land subsidence, one of the four Maths, Badrinath temple and Jyotish Peeth in the Narsingh temple of Joshimath is also in danger and suggested rehabilitating the diety and the people of the town to a safer place. “There are high chances that the Narsingh Temple, which is the winter stay of the ride of Lord Badrinath and Adi Jagadguru Shankaracharya’s Jyotishpeeth of North India may also merge into the earth, thus bringing such an important city of importance to Indian culture under threat,” he said. The Shankaracharya had arrived in Haridwar and is on his way to Joshimath. According to the religious beliefs, Adi Shankaracharya had established four Maths– Badrikashram Jyotish Peeth ...

Joshimath: Himalaya's sinking holy town

By Nishwan Rasool, Navya Sharma: Recently, people of Nestled in the Himalayan range of Uttarakhand, lies the town of Joshimath, a popular destination for pilgrims and adventure enthusiasts, but behind the serene mountain vistas and bustling bazaars, lies a grim reality of unchecked development and a rapidly sinking town. One of the reasons for people being displaced from their homes is the construction of hydropower projects and tunnels in the mountain region. For decades, scientists have warned that the holy town, built on piles of debris left behind from years of landslides and earthquakes, could not withstand heavy construction. A report from 1976 said that Joshimath's location along a slope and over a geological fault line made it inherently unstable. Its foundation of loose topsoil and soft rocks had a carrying limit. The large-scale construction has created havoc in the city, making people even pray to save their town. The cracks emerged in over 860 homes and snaked through floors, ceilings, and walls, making them unlivable. The eco-sensitive town can be saved by restricting construction activity and coping with climate change effectively.
