JRD, The Citizen

JRD’s contributions to the development of India go far beyond establishing and nurturing the country’s aviation industry, or guiding India’s leading business conglomerate for 50 years. In fact, it was clear that his destiny and India’s would be intertwined, as early as 1926. Born in Paris in 1904, to Jamsetji Tata’s cousin RD Tata and his wife Sooni Tata, JRD loved France and flying more than anything else. He spoke French better than English, though he was educated in France, Japan and England, before being drafted into the French army for a mandatory one-year service period. He would have loved to extend his time with the armed forces, but was summoned back to India by RD Tata, a fact that caused him pain at the time. Things changed soon after. After his father’s death in 1926, JRD, a French citizen, became more involved and integrated into the Indian scene and conditions and “realized that his place was in India”. In those days you were allowed dual nationality and his father had enjoyed both British-Indian and French nationalities. JRD, however, renounced his French citizenship in 1929 and decided to become an Indian citizen. JRD Tata was honoured with the UN Population Award in 1992 for his efforts towards the family planning movement in India Population control initiatives JRD was the first prominent Indian to espouse family planning. He noted that India’s population would double in 50 years (he wasn’t far off the mark – it doubled in 40). Soon after independence, wh...

JRD Tata: The doyen of Indian Industry

As the city geared up to celebrate the 117th birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna JRD Tata on Thursday, rich tributes have started pouring for the great pioneer. From 1926, when on the death of his father he became a Director of Tata Sons at the age of 22 and then its Chairman 12 years later, till his death in 1993, JRD Tata’s life was one of continuous and outstanding achievement for the national cause. As leader of India’s largest and most successful group of industrial enterprises, he made an enormous contribution to the development and growth of the nation. Born in Paris on July 29, 1904, Jehangir Ratanji Dadabhai Tata was the son of Jamsetji’s nephew Ratanji Dadabhai Tata and his French wife Sooni. The Tatas had five children who grew up and schooled in France, and sometimes in Bombay whenever the family visited the city. Though JRD would rather have been in Cambridge, he had to serve the French Army for a year in 1924 instead. The next year, RD Tata recalled him to Bombay to join the Tatas and placed him under the charge of John Peterson, the Director-in-charge of Tata Steel at Bombay House. Through the ups and downs of the decades that followed, Tatas had the good fortune to be steered by a man who stood for all the ideals that were dear to Jamsetji such as the principles of justice and equity.
