UNC doctor explains what’s causing Justin Bieber’s condition and other causes of facial paralysis

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — Pop star Justin Bieber’s announcement that he’s postponing his tour after half of his face became paralyzed has people wondering about the condition behind it. The condition is called Ramsay Hunt syndrome and it’s just one of many causes of facial paralysis. As director of the UNC Facial Nerve Center, Dr. Matthew Miller treats people with facial paralysis caused by Ramsay Hunt syndrome. “The easiest way to think about Ramsay Hunt syndrome is shingles of the facial nerve,” Miller explained. So, it’s caused by the same virus that causes chicken pox. “Once you beat that chickenpox infection, that virus always lives within you,” Miller said. The virus can reactivate at times of stress, leading to Ramsay Hunt syndrome. “The most obvious symptom of it is partial or complete facial paralysis on one side of your face,” said Miller, adding that other symptoms can include a blistering rash near the ear, intense ear pain, hearing loss, and dizziness. Not everyone has all of the symptoms. Ramsay Hunt is just one of many conditions that can cause facial paralysis. “I think we have 30 different causes of facial paralysis we are treating at the UNC Facial Nerve Center,” Miller said. For people experiencing facial paralysis, Miller emphasized that it’s important to get diagnosed as quickly as possible because the treatment depends on the cause. Whatever the cause, Miller knows how difficult it is to live with facial paralysis. He experienced it himself after an acci...

So full paralysis in this side of my face.” “So for those who are frustrated by the cancellations of my next shows, I’m just physically obviously not capable of doing them,” he explained. “This is pretty serious, as you can see. I wish this wasn’t the case, but obviously my body’s telling me I gotta slow down.” Bieber noted he’d be taking some downtime to rest and try to get himself back to full “I’m gonna get better,” he assured his followers. “I’m doing all these facial exercises to get my face back to normal and it will go back to normal. It’s just time, and we ...

Justin Bieber’s facial paralysis shifts focus on rare condition known as Ramsay Hunt syndrome

Dubai: Even as friends and fans rally around Justin Bieber following his recent diagnosis with Ramsay Hunt syndrome, not much is known about the rare medical condition that affects five out of every 100,000 people annually in the United States, according to The National Organization for Rare Disorders (NORD). The 28-year-old Canadian singer has been forced to cancel concerts from his Justice World Tour — although his UAE gigs remain unaffected as of now — with the condition paralysing one side of his face and hindering Bieber from even blinking effectively, as revealed in his Instagram post over the weekend. The ‘Peaches’ singer has said he’s been doing facial exercises and taking time to “rest and relax and get back to 100 per cent so I can do what I was born to do.” NORD describes Ramsay Hunt syndrome as a rare neurological disorder that can occur in people who were previously infected with chickenpox. If the dormant varicella-zoster virus (the same virus that causes chickenpox) is reactivated, leading to shingles, it can affect the facial nerve and may lead to facial paralysis and hearing loss. Aside from facial palsy, other symptoms can include a rash affecting the ear or mouth. Ear abnormalities such as ringing in the ears (tinnitus) and hearing loss may also occur. In most cases, only one side of the face is affected. Additional symptoms that may be present include nausea, vomiting and vertigo, according to NORD. In Bieber’s case, the condition has affected one side ...
