The Story behind Kalyug: Shashi Kapoor and Shyam Benegal's acclaimed collaboration

Shashi would eventually star in eighteen films with the actress - the highest number he’d accept alongside any Hindi film actor. ‘It was a joint decision,’ Shyam continues. ‘I would have chosen Rekha myself for Kalyug, but I don’t think she would have worked for me if I had asked her. Unlike Junoon, Shashi did not volunteer to play Karan in Kalyug - while the role was, without a doubt, pivotal to the film’s plot, it still had only a supporting function. Instead Shashi wished to play the lead as Dharamraj, and planned to offer At one point, Shashi even considered offering the role of Karan to Satyajit Ray’s favorite actor, Soumitra Chatterjee. With his plans failing through, Shashi, without any bitterness, accepted the part of Karan, even conceding, ‘Had [Soumitra] performed he would have done more justice to the character than I [could]. Shyam says, ‘That was how he was - he was okay sharing space even though he was a big star. Now, there are very few who do that.’ According to Dev Benegal, who had secured his first film unit jo...

When Does the Kali Yuga End? – New Dawn: The World's Most Unusual Magazine

In Hindu mythology, Kalki is the final incarnation of Vishnu, foretold to appear at the end of Kali Yuga, our current epoch. The Puranas foretell that he will be atop a white horse with a drawn blazing sword. He is the harbinger of the end time in Hindu eschatology, after which he will usher in the Satya (Krita) Yuga. The widespread belief that an age is ending and a new one dawning is part of a cyclical concept of time common to most philosophical cultures. The best known versions are the Four Ages of Greek mythology and the Hindu myth of the Four Yugas. The purpose of this article is to clarify some of the confusion that exists around them, to set out the actual figures as given by Eastern and Western authorities, and to discourage unthinking acceptance of a currently popular theory. 1 The earliest European source of the myth is Hesiod, a Greek poet of the eighth century BCE. In his Works and Days (lines 109-21) he describes the ages as a cycle of decline, from Golden to Silver, Bronze, and Iron. He adds the interesting idea that these ages do not only change the quality of life, but the after-death state of humans. The people of the Golden and Silver Ages, when they died, became spirits who watch over and benefit the human race. The people of the Bronze Age were not immortal in that sense, but went down to a twilight existence in Hades. Perhaps influenced by the Trojan War, Hesiod here inserts an “Age of Heroes” of whom a few crossed the ocean to enjoy a private Golden ...

Kali Yuga, The Problems and the Solution

Published on October 5th, 2021 | by HDG A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada | 94 Kali Yuga, The Problems and the Solution The age of Kali is the most condemned age due to its quarrelsome features. Kali-yuga is so saturated with vicious habits that there is a great fight at the slightest misunderstanding. Those who are engaged in the pure devotional service of the Lord, who are without any desire for self-aggrandizement and who are freed from the effects of fruitive actions and dry philosophical speculations are capable of getting out of the The leaders of the people are very much anxious to live in peace and friendship, but they have no information of the simple method of hearing the glories of the Lord. On the contrary, such leaders are opposed to the propagation of the glories of the Lord. In other words, the foolish leaders want to completely deny the existence of the Lord. In the name of secular state, such leaders are enacting various plans every year. But by the insurmountable intricacies of the material nature of the Lord, all these plans for progress are being constantly frustrated. They have no eyes to see that their attempts at peace and friendship are failing. But here is the hint to get over the hurdle. If we want actual peace, we must open the road to understanding of the Supreme Lord Krsna and glorify Him for His virtuous activities as they are depicted in the pages of In this age of Kali the propensity for mercy is almost nil. Consequently there is always fi...

50 Characteristics of Kaliyuga

We are living in the age of Kaliyuga. Both the Mahabharata and Shrimad Bhagavatam give a vivid description of how things are like in Kaliyuga. Many of these things we can see happening around us and we ourselves are also guilty of indulging in many of these actions. The following is a list of features typical to Kaliyuga according to these two shastras: Valmiki Ramayanam Kaliyuga Parayanam (Malayalam) 1). People will not think twice before cutting down trees or destroying groves. 2). Everyone will eat the same kind of food (i.e. will lack discrimination in matters of food and food-habits). 3). Even though having the outward appearance of saints, people will indulge in trade and commercial activity. 4). During Kaliyuga a man will be friends only with his wife. A man will consider only those people to be his relatives who are related to him through his wife. 5). Whoever has money will be considered of noble birth and as having good qualities. The one who has power in his hands will be able steer the course of justice in his favor. 6). The one who lacks money and cannot bribe will be deprived of justice by the courts. 7). People will consider far-off water bodies as pilgrimage but neglect pilgrimages near to them (for example living with parents and serving them). 8). Brahmins will start performing the tasks which otherwise shudras are supposed to perform. 9). Brahmins will abstain from sacrifices and the study of Vedas. 10). People will stop making offerings to their ancesto...

The 4 Yugas or Epochs of the Huge Hindu Time Scale

About the Four Yugas The four great epochs in Hinduism are Satya Yuga, Treta Yuga, Dwapar Yuga, and Kali Yuga. Satya Yug or the Age of Truth is said to last for 4,000 divine years, Treta Yuga for 3,000, Dwapara Yug for 2,000 and Kali Yuga will last for 1,000 divine years—a divine year equalling 432,000 earthly years. Symbolic Interpretations Metaphorically, the four Yuga ages may symbolize the four phases of involution during which the human gradually lost the awareness of his or her inner selves and subtle bodies. Hinduism believes that human beings have five kinds of bodies, known as annamayakosa, pranamayakosa, manomayakosa, vignanamayakosa, and anandamayakosa, which respectively mean the "gross body," the "breath body," the "psychic body," the "intelligence body," and the "bliss body." Another theory interprets these epochs of time to represent the degree of loss of righteousness in the world. This theory suggests that during Satya Yuga, only truth prevailed (Sanskrit Satya = truth). During the Treta Yuga, the universe lost one-fourth of the truth, Dwapar lost one-half of the truth, and now the Kali Yuga is left with only one-fourth of the truth. Evil and dishonesty have therefore gradually replaced truth in the last three ages. Living in the Kali Yuga We are said to presently be living in the Kali Yuga—in a world infested with impurities and vices. The numbers of people possessing noble virtues are diminishing day by day. Floods and famine, war and crime, deceit, and ...

Kali Yuga

Sadhguru explains the science behind the cycle of four yugas, and calculates the timeline since the beginning of the Kali Yuga after the Kurukshetra War. Cycles in the Sky and in the Human Body Sadhguru: In the yogic astronomy, we divide the orbit of the Earth around the Sun into 27 segments, called nakshatras. Each nakshatra is further divided into four equal sectors called padas or steps. Multiply 4 by 27 and it equals 108. These 108 units mark the 108 steps that the Earth takes through space. Each nakshatra corresponds to one half of the lunar orbit around the Earth. The cycles within the human body respond and correspond to that. When did Kali Yuga start? The story of Mahabharat needs to be seen in a certain context. In 3140 BCE, the Kurukshetra War ended, and in 3102 BCE, Krishna left his body. Three to four months after the war, the Kali Yuga began. As of 2012 AD, Krishna’s era ended 5,114 years ago. If you subtract 2592, which is the cumulative number of years of the two Kali Yugas that are at the bottom of the ellipse which describes the axial precession, you arrive at 2522 years. That means we have already completed 2522 years of Dwapara Yuga, and since its total duration is 2592 years, we still have 70 years until its completion. In the year 2082, we will complete Dwapara Yuga and move on to Treta Yuga. The world will go through another upheaval, not necessarily in terms of war but probably in terms of population explosion and natural calamities, before moving on...
