The lush sal and bamboo forests, grassy meadows and ravines of Kanha provided inspiration to Rudyard Kipling for his famous novel "Jungle Book". The Kanha National Park in Madhya Pradesh came into being in 1955 and forms the core of the Kanha Tiger Reserve, created in 1974 under Project Tiger. The Park's landmark achievement is the preservation of the rare hardground Swamp Deer (Barasingha), saving it from near extinction. Stringent conservation programs for the overall protection of the Park's fauna and flora, makes Kanha one of the most well maintained National Parks in Asia. A heightened attraction within the Park is Bamni Dadar, popularly known as Sunset Point that offers the most awe-inspiring backdrop of the sunset against grazing Sambhars and Gaurs, magnifying the natural splendor of the area. Aside from its diverse wildlife and bird population, the frequent sightings of Tigers roaming in the wild at Kanha Wildlife Sanctuary remain the most popular draw. We visited the park on 3rd June 2021 in morning safari. We entered through mukki gate in the mukki zone which is supposed to be the best for tiger sightings. In the early hours around 5.30am we entered the park and started the adventure. I was accompanied by my wife and 9yr old son. To make the trip more interesting we were joined by Miss Shaily, a naturist and wildlife photographer. She kept us engaged throughout the trip explaining about the forest, reserve and the wildlife. She kept on clearing all our curiosities one by one and so the trip was quite engaging. Those who can afford should certainly hire a naturist, otherwise every jeep is compulsorily alloted one guide. The guides are well trained and they also engage and explain. As you enter the reserve you will be mesmerized by the beauty of the forest, density and tall trees, musical chirping of birds in the background nothing less than a Mozart composition. There are around 30000 deers of different variety which u will keep on seeing through out the track alongwith wild boars and bisons. The most exciting part was tracking the tiger. The tigers are tracked by finding their foot prints, listening to calls (sounds) given by different animals. The drivers and guides are very well trained in finding them. It was declared a reserve forest in 1879 and notified as a wildlife sanctuary in 1933. In the 1930s, Kanha was divided into two sanctuaries Hallon and Banjar, of 250 sq km and 300 sq km respectively. Kanha is well regarded for its research and conservation programs, and many endangered species have been saved there. As well as tigers, the park abounds with barasingha (swamp deer) and an extensive variety of other animals and birds. Rather than offering one particular kind of animal, it provides an all-round nature experience. Park Zones Khatia Gate leads into the park's buffer zone. Kisli Gate lies a few kilometers ahead of it, and leads into the Kanha and Kisli core zones. The park has four core zones -- Kanha, Kisli, Mukki, and Sarhi. Kahna is the oldest zone, and it was the park's premium zone until the concept was abolished in 2016. Mukki, at the opposite end of the park, was the second zone to be opened. In more recent years, the Sarhi and Kisli zones were added. The Kisli zone was carved out of the Kanha zone. When to Visit The best times to visit are from November to December, and March and April when it starts getting hot and the animals come out in search of water. Try to avoid the peak months during December and January, as it's very busy. It can also get extremely cold during the winter, particularly in January. Opening Hours and Safari Times There are two safaris a day, starting from dawn until late morning, and mid afternoon until sunset. The best time to visit the park is early in the morning or after 4 p.m. to spot the animals. The park is closed from June 16 to September 30 each year, due to the monsoon season. I never realised jungles could be so cold! Definitely use the offered blankets on the jeep drives or ensure you have very warm clothes for the early morning and afternoon low temperatures. I was still shivering even with the blankets - and I'm Scottish! Anyways, this is a stunningly beautiful reserve that is an enjoyable drive in the scenery even if you spot no animals. We were lucky enough to see a tiger and 2 cubs plus jackals, birds and monkeys. The guides were genuinely interested in their job and finding animals for you. Just awesome place. For wildlife lovers it's the best place in India to visit. I am very thankful to 'Go Bhraman' to make my trip memorable. They are the reliable and very caring tour operator company in India based in Kolkata. I booked two times with them and all the times they cared a lot. their services, their staffs, their food etc all good. This is a lovely way to spend a couple of hours. We cycled from nearby Shergarh Tented Camp and sat in the shade being shown, with great patience and kindness, how to make beaded key rings, complete with dangling handmade wooden tigers. Chai, boiled over a tiny outdoor stove, was served - miraculously blue and very delicious.
