Kasturba Gandhi's role in freedom movement: A story yet to be fully told

Comrade, companion: Kasturba with Mahatma Gandhi at Wardha, Maharashtra, in January 1938 | Dinodia The sky is crayoned blue. The ground is squelchy like chocolate left out in summer. Rain has pelted nonstop for a week. And the sun filters through the freshly laundered leaves. At the Mahatma Gandhi Institute for Rural Industrialization campus in Wardha, the smell of turpentine—sprayed to ward off termites eating away Gandhian institutions—is eye-watering. Across a bridge painted in tricolours, is the thatched house where Gandhi lived. In Wardha where everything is Gandhi-touched, there is a little-known space of the other Gandhi—Kasturba. Ba ki Rasoi (Ba’s kitchen) is now turned into a shrine with an LED display of her husband. This is where his followers, those engaged in sangarsh for satya—the battle for truth—found sustenance. It was no small task, catering for a revolution. Kasturba would be up at 4am. “She took part in all Ashram activities, besides—such as cleaning grain, cutting vegetables, making chapatis, etc.,’’ wrote Sushila Nayar, her doctor in an article on Ba and Bapu. It is a large room. Faded photographs on the mud-plastered walls offer a glimpse of the sheer size of the operation it would have been. It was like feeding an army. She was as much a hard taskmaster as Gandhi, her organisational skills military efficient. “She demanded punctuality, scrupulous cleanliness, good manners and participation... from everyone eating in her kitchen,’’ wrote G. Why Mahatma Gandhi said Kasturba stood above him

By Prabhash K Dutta: One of the greatest scientists ever, Albert Einstein summed up his views on Mahatma Gandhi in the following words: Generations to come will scarce believe that such a man one as this ever in flesh and blood walked upon this earth. Mahatma Gandhi remains one of the most talked about and referred to persons even 149 years after his birth. And, as cliché goes, there is woman behind every successful man. By his own admission, Mahatma Gandhi might have been in abyss but for his wife Kasturba Gandhi's unfailing cooperation. Like Mohandas, Kastur - as Kasturba was called then - was born in an affluent family of Porbandar in Gujarat. Her father Gokul Das was a rich merchant dealing in grains, cotton and clothes with export interests in the Middle East and Africa. Her mother Vraj Kunwar was a strong-willed homemaker. Gokul Das was also a one-time Mayor of Porbandar. Mohandas's father Karamchand Gandhi was a dewan or chief minister in the government of the Rana of Porbandar, a principality in the western Gujarat. Karamchand Gandhi was posted at Rajkot. He was popularly known as Kaba Gandhi. Mohandas's mother, Putlibai was a devout follower of Vaishnavism. Being prominent in Porbandar, the two families knew each other and were friends. When they were seven years old, Kastur and Mohandas were engaged as their parents decided to cement their friendship. The marriage was solemnised in 1882 when Kastur and Mohandas were 13. Couple Who Became Activists Early in their ...

Gandhi Was a Racist Who Forced Young Girls to Sleep in Bed with Him

In August 2012, just before India's 65th Independence Day, Outlook India, one of the country's most widely circulated print magazines, There's nothing surprising about the fact that Outlook passed this assumption off as truth. Gandhi has become the obvious, no-duh barometer for Indian greatness, if not greatness in general. After all, who doesn't like Gandhi? We've come to know him as this frail, nobly malnourished old man with a purely moral, pious soul. He's a guy who ushered in a new grammar of nonviolent resistance to India, a country he helped escape the constraints of British imperial rule. He soldiered through some valiant hunger strikes until a Hindu nationalist shot, killed, and effectively martyred him. Read More: My maternal grandfather went to jail with Gandhi in 1933, so I grew up knowing this myth was cobbled together from half-truths. My grandfather took the lessons he'd learned in jail to begin an ashram in the bowels of West Bengal. As a consequence, my parents raised me with an intimate understanding of Gandhi that teetered between laudatory and critical. My family adored him, though we never really bought into the idea that he single-handedly orchestrated India's independence movement. This is to say nothing of Gandhi's bigotry, which we didn't touch in our household. In the decades since his assassination in 1948, the image of Gandhi has been constructed so carefully, scrubbed clean of its grimy details, that it's easy to forget that he predicated his r...

Kasturba Gandhi, the feisty woman whose patience inspired Gandhi's call for satyagraha

New Delhi: Kasturba Gandhi’s life was too far entrenched in her husband’s — Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi — to pry apart. Born on 11 April 1869 as Kastur Kapadia, little is known of her life before her marriage. But the glimpses available paint the portrait of a woman of exceeding patience with an unwavering will. Her silence in the face of Gandhi’s magnanimity is often read as submission, or absolute devotion, to her husband. That very well may have been the case — she was, after all, steadfastly by his side no matter what. But Kastur, Kasturba: A Life, Gandhi drew from his wife the substance of a movement that grew much bigger than both of them. On satyagraha, Gandhi’s famous doctrine of non-violence, Arun wrote, “My grandfather’s own writings yield implicit evidence of his dependence of his wife and his intimations of his identification with her. He repeatedly testified, for example, that his basic philosophy of nonviolence was simply a reflection of the basic qualities of Kasturba’s character — ‘an extension of the rule of satyagraha she practised in her own person’.” As often happens with women, Kasturba’s role in the freedom struggle and her influence over Gandhi’s life has been relegated to the shadows. But without her “unfailing cooperation”, Gandhi himself once Also read: A true companion Kastur Kapadia was born to a relatively wealthy family in Porbandar, Gujarat, and was married to Gandhi in 1883. Petty, bad tempered Kasturba — What Gandhi said while courting Sarladevi & Esther Faering

Kasturba was sick of women who had started hovering around her husband and marginalized her, throwing her into the background. But during Gandhi’s stay at Lahore, where he was courting Sarladevi, there were also two foreign women in the ashram in Kasturba’s charge. They were the Dutch missionary Esther Faering and her teacher friend Anne Marie Peterson. Instant chemistry had also developed between them and Gandhi. For them, Gandhi was the incarnation of God in man, an ideal human being, the most spiritual and so the most powerful in the world. Gandhi had ‘Indianized’ them as much as possible and made them members of his family. They were at the ashram while Gandhi was in Punjab and later on visiting different places all over India in the company of Sarladevi. It was a trying and distressing period for Kasturba. Gandhi’s open courtship of Sarladevi was well known in the ashram and a lot of people were feeling concerned about Mahatma’s conduct. Kasturba shared her anxiety with many well-wishers. She could do nothing except resent her undignified rejection by her husband. She was irritated by the presence of these foreign women in the ashram. Gandhi had asked them to assist Kasturba in the kitchen. It is not clear what exactly the trouble between Kasturba and Esther was, but she complained to Gandhi about Kasturba’s behaviour.
