Is Akshay Kumar's 'Cuttputli' based on a real story? Find out more

As the trailer of Cuttputli dropped earlier this week, Akshay Kumar’s never-seen-before avatar has created a lot of buzz. But did you know that Cuttputli is based on a real story? This Bell Bottom, with director Ranjit Tiwari helming the project. This crime thriller is the Hindi remake of the Tamil psychological thriller Ratsanan and will be releasing on Disney+Hotstar on September 2. But the most interesting part of this project is Cuttputli’s real story that’s gripping, which looks like Bollywood is getting a real thriller after a long time. But what is the real story that inspired this upcoming movie? Let’s find out. What is Cuttputli’s real story? The Cuttputli is based on Anatoly Yemelianovich Slivko, who was a Soviet serial killer, sexual predator, and necrophile. Born on December 28, 1938, he was convicted of killing seven teenage boys in the Soviet Union between 1964 and 1985. In this period spanning over two decades, Slivko had molested young boys at his youth club after tricking them into unconsciousness, and had killed some of them in an attempt to recreate the violent death of a teenage boy which he had witnessed in 1961, and got sexually aroused by it. Post that, he would often run off to a children’s club in order to relive the fantasies of this 1961 accident. He would then often befriend young boys who were shorter in height, and would make them unconscious to recreate the accident. Slivko was executed by shooting on September 16, 1989.

Even though these films, featuring bankable stars were meant for theatres, Alia Bhatt’s Darlings, Mohanlal’s 12th Man and Kangana Ranaut’s production Tiku Weds Shiru have opted for release on digital platforms, said trade experts. The move comes as producers recognise that only large-scale entertainers are setting the cash registers ringing, underscored by the poor performance of recent titles like Anek, Jayeshbhai Jordaar and Runway 34, among others, that could not draw audiences to cinemas. A film like Karan Johar’s Gehraiyaan, featuring Deepika Padukone, Siddhant Chaturvedi and Ananya Pandey, centered on love and relationships, is a good example of having made the wise choice of not leaning on theatrical numbers when it premiered on Amazon Prime Video, a few months ago, trade experts say. The few medium-budget films without large-scale action or grandeur, especially in Hindi, that did take the plunge to brave theatrical release, have thrown up poor results in the past few weeks, despite featuring bankable stars. Shahid Kapoor’s Jersey ( ₹19.68 crore), Ajay Devgn’s Runway 34 ( ₹32.96 crore), Tiger Shroff’s Heropanti 2 ( ₹24.45 crore), Ranveer Singh’s Jayeshbhai Jordaar ( ₹15.59 crore) and Ayushmann Khurrana’s Anek ( ₹8 crore), stand out examples. Trade experts say the dismal box office of Kangana Ranaut’s Dhaakad that finished at less than ₹3 crore is making post-theatrical OTT deals difficult, with the film finding no takers among streaming players. To be sure, the scen...
