First Ride: Kawasaki’s Z900 SE Blows Away the Base Model – Robb Report

Kawasaki’s Z900 SE naked bike. Photo by Peter Jackson. The superior performance where it matters has turned the Z900 score up a number of notches in my book. Already graced with a lovely motor that really comes alive north of 5,000 rpm, the Z900 SE now takes that delivers that output in a smoother and more controlled fashion via the new suspension, and does so in a manner that the stock Z900 can’t compete with. The bike comes equipped with four variable engine modes, a High and Low power mode, ABS, traction control and smartphone connectivity. Photo: Courtesy of Peter Jackson. One plus is that the 948 cc motor has proven rock solid as far as reliability, which is largely due to Kawasaki having an encyclopedic knowledge of large-capacity four-cylinder motors that dates back to the early 1970s, so you’re in good hands there. With the Z900 SE, Kawasaki has filled many of the required briefs for a modern naked bike, and built a good one. Should the Z900 SE ever get cruise control and a quickshifter, it could be a great one.

2022 Kawasaki Z900 and Z900RS 50th Anniversary Editions First Look

The 1972 Kawasaki Z1 is one of the most iconic motorcycles in history. The 1969 Honda CB750 started the ball rolling for the inline-4 configuration, and the Z1 upped the ante in two significant ways—it had double overheads and a displacement of 903cc. The superbike wars had begun. The current Z900s are direct descendants of the 1972 Z1, and the 2022 Kawasaki Z900 and Z900RS 50th Anniversary editions pay homage to their common ancestor. With its inherent retro styling, the 2022 Kawasaki Z900RS inarguably looks the part with its two-tone Candy Diablo Brown, which includes Orange, in a Fireball Incandescent paint scheme. It’s a premium paint job, with the colors being applied in layers for a glossy look. The frame is glossy black, and the wheels are gold. The side covers boast “900” with “Double Overhead Camshaft” below it in smaller letters, directly inspired by the 1972 Z1. A Z 50th logo is added to the tank, and the seat has a unique texture and stitching color. For added bling, there’s a chrome grab bar around the perimeter of the back of the seat. The 2022 Kawasaki Z900 50th Anniversary gets Firecracker Red paint, bringing to mind the 1981 GPz1100. Additional styling touches include silver and dark blue highlights, a gloss black frame, plus gold Kawasaki and Z logs on the tank and intake scoop. Look more closely, and you’ll see a Z 50th logo on the front fender, along with red wheels with silver pinstripes. Finally, the fork legs are gold—a traditional 50th-anniversary c...

2022 Kawasaki Z900RS SE

Advertisement At the heart of the Z900RS SE is a liquid-cooled, 948cc, 16-valve, inline-Four, which made 100 horsepower at 8,500 rpm and 67.5 lb-ft of torque at 6,700 rpm at the rear wheel in our A fully adjustable 41mm inverted fork offers 10 clicks of compression adjustment, 12 clicks of rebound adjustment, and a stepless preload adjuster. At the rear, the RS is fitted with a horizontal backlink Öhlins S46 shock with a remote preload adjuster. The shock is linked to an extruded lightweight aluminum swingarm to maximize handling, with the linkage placed atop the swingarm helps to centralize the weight. Braking is provided by a pair of radial-mount monoblock Brembo 4-piston M4.32 front calipers squeezing 300mm petal discs with a Nissin radial-pump master cylinder. Out back, a 2-piston caliper squeezes a 250mm petal disc. ABS and stainless-steel braided lines are standard. In keeping with the classic styling, the Z900RS SE is equipped with cast flat spoke wheels, finished in gold, to resemble traditional wire-spoked wheels. Dunlop GPR-300 tires further add to the retro credentials. The Z900RS SE features a large-diameter round LED headlight with a convex lens and chrome ring, adding to the retro look without compromising on lighting. LEDs have replaced all the lights except for the turnsignals. A dual-dial analog instrument cluster is coupled with a multi-function LCD screen for retro-style with modern functionality. The LCD features white letters on a black background and ...
