Meet Shashank Moddhia: the man disrupting kidney dialysis industry with his low

wp:paragraph At the peak of Coronavirus pandemic in June 2020, four kidney dialysis centres in north Mumbai’s Borivali, Kandivali and Gorai areas had to be shut down due to the spread of COVID-19. Patients suffering from chronic kidney disease need dialysis three times a week and the pandemic worsened things for them. But a newly-opened facility in Borivali began absorbing all the kidney patients, maintaining social distancing, disinfecting and ensuring that nobody contracted the virus while undergoing dialysis. Soon, it opened two more centres – in Dombivali and Kandivali - to offer dialysis to kidney patients who had contracted COVID-19. The Renal Project (TRP), a chain of dialysis micro centres in Maharashtra founded by Shashank Moddhia, supported hundreds of life by offering the essential medical services during the pandemic. Elizabeth from Borivali is a case in point. “I was worried when I heard that the dialysis centre, where I had been going for the last one year, had shut down due to COVID-19,” she says. Also Read: “I need dialysis every three days and there is no other option for me to survive till I receive a transplant. I am thankful that TRP could offer this service amid the pandemic,” says the 28-year-old. “We trained the staff to disinfect and follow all the rules as we took in as many patients as possible. The technicians who worked with COVID-19 patients didn’t work with negative patients. Our costs went up but we didn’t worry about the bottomline,” says 40...

Peritoneal dialysis

Methods The cost and clinical effectiveness of starting KRT with either PD or HD were measured in terms of life years (LYs) and quality-adjusted life years (QALYs) using a mathematical Markov model. Complications such as peritonitis, vascular access–related complications and blood-borne infections were considered. Health system costs, out-of-pocket expenditures borne by patients and indirect costs were included. Two scenarios were considered: Scenario 1 (real-world scenario)—as per the current cost and utilization patterns; Scenario 2 (public programme scenario)—use in the public sector as per Pradhan Mantri National Dialysis Programme (PMNDP) guidelines. The lifetime costs and health outcomes among KF patients were assessed. Results The mean QALYs lived per KF person with PD and HD were estimated to be 3.3 and 1.6, respectively. From a societal perspective, a PD-first policy is cost-saving as compared with an HD-first policy in both Scenarios 1 and 2. If only the costs directly attributable to patient care (direct costs) are considered, the PD-first treatment policy is estimated to be cost-effective only if the price of PD consumables can be brought down to INR70/U. INTRODUCTION Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a global public health problem. Approximately 17% of the global CKD population resides in India [ Only a small proportion of KF patients get pre-emptive transplantation, while the rest are eligible for dialysis only—either HD or PD [ The announcement of the Pradhan ...
