Kobe Bryant's life and spirit remain vivid a year after death

It’s been a year now, and I was once walking down a curving path and there he was, standing on the side of the road, motioning me forward. In another dream, I was sitting at press row watching some serious sporting event when I felt his presence beside me, laughing, nudging me, trying to make me laugh. I know how crazy this must sound. I understand how contrived this must feel. When I first began having these dreams last spring, I embarrassedly shared them with a colleague. He urged me to write about it, but I declined, saying nobody would believe me. At the time, I didn’t even know whether I believed me. I’m reluctantly sharing them now because, on this It’s been a year now, and I still can’t shake him. He’s still here. He still lives among us. He’s in our daily struggles. He’s in our personal triumphs. He’s in our last-second defensive stops or buzzer-beating shots or wherever we require that Mamba Mentality. Even amid a pandemic in which nobody is supposed to be anywhere, Kobe is everywhere. His last name is printed on jerseys that have become the city’s unofficial uniform. His first name is in chants that suddenly break out among socially distanced friends. His face is on city murals that have become drive-by tourist attractions. Is it any wonder he would show up in the middle of our sleep? For many, his spirit floats through this town like our cool evening breeze, coming alive as darkness approaches to inspire, comfort and connect. For others, that spirit is a nasty S...

Kobe Bryant, Grizzlies? Jerry West said he talked legend out of it

Memphis Grizzlies legend Kobe Bryant? It doesn’t quite have the same ring to it as Los Angeles Lakers legend Kobe Bryant. But it nearly could have been the case if it wasn’t for another Lakers legend in 2004. Jerry West, who was actually the Grizzles’ general manager at the time, pointed Bryant away from Memphis and told him he belonged in the Los Angeles area instead. And the reason? Not so much because West was loyal to his Lakers roots. "I guess in some sense, that might have been tampering. But I didn’t look at it as tampering because he was at our house all the time. He ate at my house all the time," West said on an episode of the "Podcast P with Paul George." “I felt more like a father figure with him. I had a wonderful relationship with him.” Bryant’s free agency in 2004 was one of the biggest in NBA history at the time. LeBron James had just completed his rookie season, and Michael Jordan retired after his third NBA stint in 2003. Bryant and the Lakers – featuring Shaquille O’Neal, Karl Malone and Gary Payton – had just lost in the 2004 NBA Finals to the Detroit Pistons, and Bryant pondered a change. Bryant entertained the idea of playing for the Los Angeles Clippers in 2004, but re-signed after O’Neal was traded to the Miami Heat. Bryant later requested a trade to the Chicago Bulls in 2007. “He became a free agent, OK? And he called me, and his agent then was Rob Pelinka. And so I met them in Orange County in a hotel room, and he said he wanted to come to Memphis ...
