Monsoon Expected to Arrive in Kolkata After Cyclone Biparjoy Makes Landfall

“We are not expecting formation of systems like a cyclonic circulation or a low pressure area over Bay of Bengal, systems that will bring in pre-monsoon or monsoon showers, before Biparjoy makes landfall. Currently all such weather activities are active on Arabian Sea. We see no hope for rain relief in the next three to four days,” said Thundershowers in parts of Kolkata on Monday evening had brought the lowest temperature down by a notch below normal mark but in absence of rain , the temperature soared rapidly on Tuesday morning. The temperature increased to 37.7 degrees, three degrees above normal, on Tuesday up from 36.2 degrees Celsius on Monday. However, city residents complained of extremely discomfort with the real feel going up as high as 40 degrees Celsius.

Kolkata weather: Mercury touches 36.5 degree Celsius, hottest day so far this year

KOLKATA: Thursday turned out to be the hottest day so far this year with the maximum temperature breaching the 35°C mark. Following a two-degree jump, the mercury touched 36.5°C. The rise in temperature signals the beginning of a hot spell, which is predicted to continue till mid-April. It would pave the way for a scorching and dry spell when the mercury might climb close to 40°C, said weathermen. The hot spell was likely to gradually turn more severe till at least April 15, Met office said. Excluding one day in February, when the mercury had crossed 35°C, the temperature had remained below that mark so far, with an unusually cool March, according to Met officials. The upcoming temperature rise is likely to come in two distinct periods - the first between April 6 and 9 and the second between April 10 and 15. Chances of rain during this period were extremely low except for possible minor isolated showers in north Bengal, the weather office said. The Alipore Met officials said on Thursday that there was a reasonable chance of a heat wave in Malda and South Dinajpur during this period. Evaluating the conditions of the rising heat, the Met office will be able to forecast a heat wave up to five days before its onset. For a heat wave to be declared, the conditions have to prevail for at least two consecutive days, according to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD). The upcoming hot spell could be unique compared to other years as it is expected to be considerably dryer whil...

Kolkata Temperature: Maximum temperature touches 40 degree Celsius again

The maximum temperature recorded in the city on Monday remained in the 40-degrees range, with Alipore logging 40°C, Salt Lake 40.5°C and Dum Dum 41.6°C. With moisture from the Bay of Bengal having started gathering, the possibility of thundershowers in East and West Midnapore, Jhargram and South 24 Pargana seems to be on the horizon between April 22 and 24. Although it is to early to be certain, the Alipore Met office said Kolkata might also receive rainfall, but not before April 24. "The only way to bring down temperatures and end a heat wave, like the prevalent one, is with rainfall. However, the showers that we are anticipating will not be widespread. Only four to five districts may witness one to two thunderstorms between April 22 and 24. As of now, the chances of Kolkata receiving rainfall are slightly lower. If it rains, it is unlikely to occur in the city before April 24," said Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) director G K Das. The RMC issued a heat wave warning on April 12, following three days of alerts of hot and discomfort weather between April 7 and 11. RMC deputy director-general Sanjib Bandyopadhyay said the continuous dry spell from April 2 to April 17 was quite exceptional. "While maximum temperature exceeding 40°C and heat waves were common during April in Bengal districts, it is usually interrupted with bouts of rainfall," he said. For the remaining period of the heat wave until April 21, Kolkata's maximum temperature is predicted to pivot around 40°C...
