Vijay Hazare Trophy: With 6/31 and hat

Khejroliya has a staggering haul of 43 wickets in 17 List A matches. (File Photo) ‘Papa kehte hain bada naam karega, beta hamara aisa kaam karega…” You are greeted by this vintage number from Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak when you call Delhi’s pacer Kulwant Khejroliya. This coming-of-age song couldn’t have been a more apt caller tune for Kulwant because his exploits in the Vijay Hazare Trophy quarter-final against Haryana on Sunday would surely have made his father Gaurishankar proud. On an abrasive Chinnaswamy Stadium wicket in Bengaluru, the left-armer worked up decent pace, got the ball to reverse-swing, and bowled a match-altering spell in which he prised out six scalps, including a hat-trick. He was ably supported by new-ball partner Gambhir’s whirlwind century notwithstanding, it was all Khejroliya. His 6/31 capped another chapter to his gritty, against-all-odds initiation into cricket. Growing up in Rajasthan’s Jhunjhunu district, his father, who runs a kirana store, wanted his eldest son to join the army. But Kulwant was seduced by the idea of becoming a fast bowler. The story goes that three winters ago, the youngster told his father that he had got a job in “Jhooth bolke ghar se bhaag gaya tha aur unhe laga ki cricket khel kar time barbaad karega.” But Kulwant made rapid strides after he landed in the national capital. First, he got selected into Sanjay Bharadwaj’s famous LB Shastri Academy, where he met Gambhir. Three years later, after his List A and Ranji Trophy debu...

Kulwant Khejroliya Profile

Kulwant Khejroliya Biography Kulwant Khejroliya is an Indian cricketer who hails from Rajasthan. Born on the 13th of March, 1992, in Jhunjhunu, Khejroliya is a left-handed fast bowler who currently plays for Delhi in the domestic circuit. Background The fast-bowler was from a lower-middle class family. His parents wanted their son to complete his education and secure a well paid job. Khejroliya tried his hand at the railway exams. After failing a couple of times, he served as a waiter at a Restaurant in Goa. One of his friends saw the young man’s talent and asked him to join the LB Shastri Academy in Delhi. The young man did not disappoint the selectors at the trials. Gautam Gambhir was impressed with his talent and asked the coaches to train him for the senior team. Kulwant trained under Sanjay Bhardwaj and Atul Wassan. He was consistently generating pace and had the ability to move the ball both ways. However, inducting him into the senior team right away was not an option as fresh and raw talents must be groomed and trained so that they perform to the best of their ability. Khejroliya was regularly bowling to senior players at the nets which made him improve on a lot of aspects and take his game to the next level. Debut The fast bowler hasn’t made any international appearances yet. However, the day might not be too far when we get to see him in the blue jersey. Rise to Glory Khejroliya took two wickets in his first game for Delhi against Assam on the 6th of October, 201...

From Rags to Riches: Kulwant Khejroliya

K ulwant Khejroliya is a perfect example of a ‘small town-big dreams’ story. The 26 year-old left-handed pacer from Jhunjhunu, a remote village in Rajasthan, had quite a rocky start to his life but with hardwork and dedication is now has an IPL player with Royal Challengers Bangalore. Khejroliya, in his early days, worked as a waiter in Goa until he made his debut for Delhi in the 2017 Vijay Hazare Trophy. “I started playing cricket two years ago; when a friend of mine told me that I had cricketing talent and encouraged me to think about it seriously,” says Kulwant. “I didn’t tell my parents about this decision for a long time.” he adds. Kulwant wasn’t very good at studies and had failed a number of competitive examinations. Which meant no steady job. “We were a poor family and needed money; so I told my parents that I was joining a friend’s transport business in Ahmedabad instead,” informs Kulwant. He then joined the Lal Bahadur Shastri club in Delhi; the same club that produced players like Gautam Gambhir, Unmukt Chand and Nitish Rana. Under the guidance of coach Sanjay Bharadwaj, Kulwant trained to become a fine bowler that we see today. Looking back at his days of struggle, Kulwant said, “If I hadn’t made something of my life, I would have lot to answer for. But now that I have made it here, folks back in my village are happy and very proud of me.”
