When Lata Mangeshkar interviewed Kishore Kumar

Lata Mangeshkar's life and career are widely known and yet there is an aspect that remains largely unrecorded: Her life on the international stage. Mohan Deora -- the co-promoter and co-organiser of Mangeshkar's international tours from 1975 to 1998 -- and her niece Rachana Shah give us a glimpse of her career as an international concert artiste in their book, On Stage with Lata. The book reveals her journeys with Mukesh who tragically died during a Detroit tour in August 1976, Manna Dey and Kishore Kumar. Glimpses from the book, On Stage With Lata. Kishore, notorious for his aversion towards the press, had been persuaded as well -- or so it seemed at the time. Punita Bhatt went onto describe to me what happened next: The interview was arranged in a suite at Washington's famous Watergate Hotel where the artistes were staying. Something seemed to have upset him, but it wasn't clear what. His sole condition to emerge from the kitchen was conveyed through us to Lata who was standing outside; she would have to interview him! Lata gamely agreed. Kishore came out and became the very picture of amiable cooperation. Punita Bhatt continued with her fascinating acc...

When Lata Mangeshkar thought Kishore Kumar was 'following' her – ThePrint – PTI Feed

Mumbai, Feb 6 (PTI) Lata Mangeshkar and Kishore Kumar had some of the best musical collaborations to their credit but their first meeting began with a misunderstanding as the Melody Queen thought the singer was “following” her. In her book “Lata Mangeshkar: In Her Own Voice”, documentary maker and author Nasreen Munni Kabeer writes that the singing icon recalled with great amusement the first time she met Kishore Kumar on her way to the Bombay Talkies studio. Mangeshkar said she was working with Khemchand Prakash on 1949’s “Ziddi” when she crossed paths with Kishore Kumar. Mangeshkar had taken the local train to Malad, a suburb in Mumbai, where Bombay Talkies was situated. Kishore Kumar’s elder brother and actor Ashok Kumar was the owner of Bombay Talkies. Kishore Kumar was also in the same compartment, seated close to Mangeshkar and also got down at the Malad Station and was virtually walking behind her till she reached the studio. “I would take the train from Grant Road to Malad and one day Kishore da got on at the next stop. I thought he looked very familiar and wondered who he was. We both got off at Malad. Bombay Talkies studio was a long way from the station and that day I decided to take a taanga. And Kishore da hired one too,” Mangeshkar told Kabeer for the book, published by Niyogi Books. Mangeshkar thought Kishore Kumar was stalking her and complained to music composer Khemchand Prakash, the musician credited with discovering the singer, on reaching her destina...

When Lata Mangeshkar Thought Kishore Kumar Was Chasing Her; The Songs She Refused

Lata Mangeshkar was born as Hema. Later she was renamed as Latika after a character in one of her father Pandit Dinanath Mangeshkar’s plays. Her dad’s original title was Hardikar which he changed to Mangeshkar since he was from Goa’s Mangeshi town. Later Latika was called Lata and she is universally known as Lata didi to all. On the legend’s 92nd birthday let us go on a trivia journey of her early life, her association with her colleagues and her lifelong indulgence with cricket. Lata was not only gifted but ever willing to learn. Once legend Dilip Kumar observed that she had a Marathi accent. A normal reaction would be obstinacy, denial, taking it to heart or protest. However, Lata immediately took diction training from an Urdu teacher named Shafi and it added finesse to her singing. Greatness comes from such small things as well. Asha, Meena, Lata, Usha and Hridaynath/ PC: indianhistorypics At 33, Lata was almost killed through slow poison which made her unconscious for three days and bedridden for three months. The vanishing act by her maid without taking his wages possibly hinted at this being a murder attempt by rivals/enemies. Lyricist Majrooh Sultanpuri used to visit her daily and he voluntarily acted as her food taster. Lata had maximum duets with Rafi even though for some time they had professional differences on royalty and payment issues. She sang 440 duets with Rafi and 327 with Kishore Kumar. Lata and Kishore were probably the best ever singing pair. Let us ex...

Touted to be one of the most celebrated singers in Indian cinema, Kishore Kumar was one of the few ones who breathed life into lyrics with his melodious voice. It won't be wrong that there's a Kishore da song for every occasion and his songs continue to enthrall generations after generations. Had the music legend been alive today (August 4, 2021), he would have been 92! Speaking about the late singer's sense of humour, Lata recalled, "Kishoreda and I were born in the same year 1929. He was two months older than me, and would never let me forget that.Kishoreda bahot hasaate tthe(he used to make me laugh a lot) so much so that sometimes it used to be a big problem to stop laughing and get to work." She continued, "Kishoreda would crack us up with his jokes and one-liners. It would become a problem when we had to sing a serious song together , I couldn't stop...
