Laxman Pai, renowned Goan painter and Padma Bhushan awardee, passes away at 95

Renowned painter and Padma Bhushan awardee Laxman Pai died at his residence in Goa on the evening of 14 March, sources close to him said. He was 95. He breathed his last at his home in Dona Paula, they said. Born in Margao, Goa in 1926, Pai was honoured with several prestigious awards, including the Padma Bhushan, Padma Shri, Nehru Award and Lalit Kala Akademi Award. He pursued a diploma in art and painting at Mumbai's JJ School of Art and later served as a fellow who taught there too, Times of India. He was also the Indian Express; he participated in the Goa Liberation Movement and was jailed for his role in the Indian freedom struggle. Laxman Pai an Indian artist and painter returned to his home state after many years. At the age of 90, he still enjoys painting like there’s no tomorrow. He has taken a conscious decision to stop labelling his paintings to allow people have a direct communication with art. “I want people to find their own image, not necessarily the image of the artist, and enjoy it,” he says. Pai served as principal of the Goa College of Art from 1977 to 1987 and was born in Margao. His first experience with paint brushes and colours was at his maternal uncle Mauzo’s photography studio. He also contributed illustrations for hand-written magazines edited by Manohar Sardesai. At the time, Goan artists Dinanath Dalal and R S Mulgaonkar were earning very well, and Pai’s parents thought it was a flourishing profession to get into. He pursued a diploma in Art at JJ School of Art in Mumbai. In 1946, he decided to join the Goa Liberation movement, offering Satyagraha outside the Margao police station and getting arrested for it. He was still studying in the final year. He remembers his swollen hands after being beaten up in custody but was soon let out as he was still a minor. The grand old man of Goan art, Laxman Pai, is not with us anymore. Physically. However, the body of work that he has left behind makes us a richer culture. He passed away on Sunday night. The Padma Bhushan awardee was not just an artists but he also influenced and shaped many people as a teacher. He was a principal of the Goa College of Art, a post he held from 1977 to 1987. His tryst with art was at his uncle’s Mauzo Photo Studio in Margao, where he used to touch up the black and white photographs with paint. In the 1940s, he was actively involved in the Goa liberation movement for which he was arrested thrice by the Portuguese colonials. He was beaten by the Portuguese police after being arrested and for this reason. Later, he left for Bombay as Mumbai was known then, where he studied at the Sir J J School of Art from 1943 to 1947. He was awarded the Mayo Medal in 1947. Pai sat on satyagraha outside the Margao Police Station in 1946, which ensured that he became an important figure in the Goan cultural firmament.
