‎CHARLIE by Charlie Puth on Apple Music

Far from the blockbuster pop of his 2016 debut, Nine Track Mind, or the seductive early-’90s R&B of 2018’s Voicenotes, Charlie Puth’s third LP is about the pop star’s sense of interiority. Written with what he calls “feelings first, music to follow,” it’s about the two biggest breakups of his life: a romantic relationship in 2019 and his former record label. If there is a single theme that binds the songs together, he claims it’s bitterness, but a better word might be ‘catharsis.’ “These thoughts spin in my head like a dishwasher,” he tells Apple Music. “I put them against a beat, add some melody, and when the song is finished, it’s like putting a letter in a glass bottle and sending it off into the ocean.” The overall effect is a richer sound, from the stacked ’80s synth-pop of “There’s a First Time for Everything” to the 2000s pop rock of “Smells Like Me” and the sole collaboration, “Left and Right,” featuring BTS’s Jung Kook. “I don't hold any sort of resentment for any of the people in those parties that I openly sing about on this record. I have nothing against them,” he says. “But it was important for me to get all this wording out on this album.” Below, Puth walks Apple Music through CHARLIE, track by track. “That’s Hilarious” “All of these songs come with combining an ugly and a beautiful thing together. In this song, I wanted the lyrics to be ugly and beautiful at the same time, just like I wanted the sound to be ugly and beautiful as well. It starts with pretty c...

Charlie Puth & BTS’ Jungkook’s “Left And Right” Song Lyrics, Explained

A new era of BTS has officially begun. Just days after the septet announced they would be taking Similar to Puth’s previous singles “ Finally, Puth confirmed their collab in a TikTok on June 17. “If we get 500,000 pre-saves I’ll drop it on June 24,” the singer teased. True to his word, Puth dropped “Left and Right” a week later, along with a music video for the song featuring Jungkook. The “Left and Right” music video sees Puth and Jungkook visiting a love doctor as they try and forget a past relationship. “Memories follow me left and right / I can feel you over here / I can feel you over here / You take up every corner of my mind,” the two croon during the chorus. At one point, the stars go out for a late-night drive to take their mind off things. Puth is seen behind the wheel as Jungkook chills on the hood of the car before falling over. The video’s playful atmosphere goes perfectly with the upbeat single while also contrasting with the song’s sad lyrics about heartbreak. “Did you know you're the one that got away? / And even now, baby, I'm still not okay,” the duo sings during the bridge. “Did you know that my dreams, they're all the same? / Every time I close my eyes.” Momodu Mansaray/WireImage/Getty Images According to Rolling Stone, “Left and Right” will be featured on Charlie, which is due out later this year. Chorus: Charlie Puth Memories follow me left and right I can feel you over here, I can feel you over here You take up every corner of my mind (Whatcha gon' do...

Charlie Puth sings 'Jersey Girl' at his PNC Bank Arts Center debut

Charlie Puth has been “Bruuuced.” It happened at the hitmaker’s concert Saturday, June 3 at the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel when Puth, a Rumson native, started playing “Jersey Girl.” The song is a Tom Waits original but closely associated with Springsteen, who has performed it in concert. Some fans recognized the opening chords and yelled “Bruuuce.” Springsteen was not at the show, but Puth is a fan and has performed his material in the past. His walk-on music on Saturday, just before he took the stage, was Springsteen's “Glory Days.” Puth ruled the stage kind of like a Boss, delivering his R&B infused pop hits for an hour and half in the “Charlie Live Experience” tour show to approximately 8,000 screaming and standing fans. Puth provided details on the writing of his songs on Saturday. “The snare and in this key of D major it all came together,” said Puth of his hit, “Left and Right,” which came to him while he was sleeping. More: More: Puth had a four member band and his synthesizer keyboards and a stand-up piano were at the forefront of the stage. He also played a strapped on keytar during the show, including on the rock jam for “How Long.” He climbed the riser in the middle of the stage and looked like a rock star up there, well, because Puth is a rock star. Entertain This!, USA TODAY Puth closed the show with his smash “See You Again,” first solo and then joined in by his band. After the performance he blew kisses and held his hand over his heart as the crowd chee...
