Google Feature — Easter Egg On November 17, 2011, the web giant Google rolled out an Easter egg for the search query “let it snow” which had a very seasonal nature. Google is getting into the festive spirit and presents this holiday seasons a really cool Easter egg search trick. Typing ‘let it snow’ into a Google search bar, flakes of soft, white snow gently begin to fall from the top of your screen. Slowly it covers Google’s search results with a light coating of snow and lets you draw anything. But as the snow continues to fall and the screen slowly frosts over, reading the search results becomes more difficult. At this point, the blue Search button is replaced by a Defrost button. You can either click the defrost button to clear your screen instantly, or by simply clicking and holding the left mouse button you can write a frosty phrase on your computer or wipe away the snow. For those who haven’t tried it yet, pull Google up on your browser and type in the words ‘let it snow.’ Then enjoy a snow flurry right on your computer screen. To keep the wintery fun going, Google also added a frosty element to the experience: As the snow continues to fall, your computer screen will fog up. Click the ‘defrost’ button to clear it, or use a mouse to draw hearts, or initials or whatever else you want in the fog. You can click defrost at any time to start over again. But I’m feeling a little more weather-engaged with the holiday season thanks to Google’s latest Easter egg… or perhaps “stocking stuffer” would be a better analogy. Just type “let it snow” into a Google search field in most browsers (not all versions of Internet Explorer may work), and along with the results for Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra performing in YouTube videos, snowflakes will start to fall gently from the top of the window. Leave it for a few more seconds and the window will start to fog up. You can clear it by clicking and “scrubbing” with the cursor, or just click the Defrost button for an instant fix. Now if only this worked with weather.com! If you’d like to decorate your search window for the holidays, just type either “Christmas” or “Hanukkah” into a Google search field; the results page displays a row of Christmas tree lights or Star of David symbols at the top. Alas, I couldn’t figure any way to get Google to snow on either Christmas or Hanukkah. (After I wrote this, Google also added multicolored candles to the search results page if you enter “Kwanzaa”.) Interestingly, you can write on the screen covered with fog with your mouse once it is all frozen. It gives an actual feeling of playing on real windows like on those good old days.
