Liger Movie Review: Vijay Deverakonda's Liger can't roar, it purrs

By Janani K: For the past month, we have seen Vijay Deverakonda and Ananya Panday in every corner of the country in flashy clothes promoting Liger. Vijay Deverakonda, director Puri Jagannadh and co-producer Charmme Kaur were, therefore, confident of Liger's success. In a promotional interview, the Arjun Reddy actor claimed that Liger is already a 'blockbuster'. Has the film lived up to the expectations that the team created with aggressive promotions? The answer is a big no. Balamani (Ramya Krishnan) and her son Liger (Vijay Deverakonda), who reside in Karimnagar, move to Mumbai to make it big in the world of MMA. Liger, (yes, that's his name, we kid you not) has a stutter and is, therefore, ridiculed at every opportunity. His fighting skills shut people up. Soon, they find a coach for him in Ronit Roy. Liger's ultimate aim in life is to become a famous MMA fighter. Balamani, however, warns him not to get distracted by falling in love. Meanwhile, Tanya (Ananya Panday), a social media celebrity, is impressed after seeing Liger fight. And eventually, they fall in love. So, exactly what his mother warned him not to do. Hmm... Director Puri Jagannadh, who has given several memorable films in the past, looks totally out of form. Liger took three years to make, but the story doesn't show that. It is a story that is so stale that even a child could predict the proceedings. You get no justifiable backstory as to why Balamani and Liger chose MMA as a life goal. That said, Liger sta...

Liger Movie Review Vijay Devarakonda Ananya Pandey Mike Tyson Starred Liger Review Rating

Sports Action Director: Puri Jagannadh Starring: Vijay Deverakonda Ananya Panday Ramya Krishnan Ronit Roy New Delhi: 'Liger' is a template too old for the theatrical experience. The Vijay Deverakonda and Ananya Panday starrer is like any typical-action comedy which goes way too above and below, and returns to the familiar formula territory without delivering anything substantial. Had it not been for the performances of Vijay Deverakonda, Ramya Krishnan and Ronit Roy, 'Liger' would be a recipe for disaster. 'Liger' opens with animated cast credits with an orchestra kind background score which is also used quite a lot in the film to help you recover as audiences from the meticulously choreographed action sequences. The opening sequence of the Liger, like its screenplay, is confusing. For instance, it opens to a grand MMA championship match, Ananya Panday ( Tania) getting kidnapped, Vijay chasing a car on the streets of Las Vegas and then after building a heightened sense of momentum, 'Liger' immediately shifts to the streets of Mumbai to recollect the story in retrospect. Note: The whistles on Deverakonda's entry in a first-day, first-show did build up expectations. Vijay Deverakonda's character 'Liger' guides the narrative with a voiceover and we are introduced to Liger and his mother, Ramya Krishnan in Mumbai as tea-sellers from Benaras who want to become MMA national champions to fulfill the dream of his dead father. The angle is there but there is no plot or a way to fles...

Liger Movie Review

OUR RATING 1.75/5 CENSOR •UA• What Is the Film About? Balamani (Ramya Krishna) and his son Liger (Vijay Deverakonda) move to Mumbai from Karimnagar to learn MMA. Soon they find a coach, and Liger starts training. It is the dream of Liger to become an MMA fighter. Liger’s mom warns him to stay away from girls and not fall in love. The overall story is what happens when Liger falls in love with Tanya (Ananya Panday). The journey of Liger from a National champion to an International one, and what happens later, is the movie’s overall plot. Performances Without any doubt, Vijay Deverakonda is the mainstay of Liger. He has always been sincere in his acts, but one could sense repetitiveness. In Liger, one gets such a feeling despite the unique characterisation. Vijay Deverakonda plays a guy with a stutter. It is a simple tweak, but it brings a lot of freshness to the role. It comes with a problem, but more on it later. The character trait and the action form the two shades in Liger for Vijay Deverakonda. If the stuttering dominated the significant portions of the first half, aiding the romance, then it’s the action plus stammering in the second. If one were to assess the part strictly, there is nothing new in the act from Vijay Deverakonda outside the stutter. Even here, Puri Jagannadh goes overboard with it in the second half. Literally, every word is spoken that way which is an overkill and becomes an irritating factor. One might face the same problem much earlier too. However...

Liger Movie Review: Vijay Deverakonda delivers a seeti maar performance but plot ne dimaag ki waat laga di

Director: Puri Jagannadh Star cast: Vijay Deverakonda, Ananya Panday, Ramya Krishnan, Ronit Roy Bollywood Bubble ratings: 2.5/5 stars Liger Movie review: This time, I watched Liger, first day first show and oh boy, the response from the audience was quite enthralling. Fans were whistling and hooting the moment they saw Vijay Deverakonda in his best elements. In fact, a fan next to my seat was screaming so much, that my ears started to hurt. The film starts on a high note but the climax falls flat on its face. I really don’t want to bash Liger in this review but I’ll try my best to be nice to this movie. First – all the action sequences look absolutely thrilling and well choreographed. Second – when it comes to the story, is poorly and abysmally written. Third- the songs are pretty groovy but misplaced in the entire movie. In fact, they look quite forced to me. Fourth- the climax looks absurd as if someone just hit the pause button and closed the window. It looks a little childish. Fifth- Ananya Panday and Vijay Deverakonda’s chemistry looks broken and faulty. I didn’t feel like watching them more. Sixth- Once again going to talk about the fights because they really enticed me. Given the fact that I absolutely enjoy action, the MMA fight sequence is my favourite in the entire movie. Similar fights were shown in Dharma Productions’ Brothers starring Sidharth Malhotra and Akshay Kumar as well as in YRF’s Sultan which I thoroughly enjoyed. Well, I have a similar feeling with L...

Liger movie review: Vijay Deverakonda film is a cringe

So, first off, in case you were wondering, ‘Liger’ is what you get when a lion and a tiger mate. Got it? Not really? Never mind, here’s a ready reckoner of what to expect from the new That was the nutshell. Breaking it open, the age-old themes of fierce-mother-loving-son twinning with macho chest-thumping sporty patriotism is used to roll out a cringe-fest of mammoth proportions. What do you want first: character upon character dissing the stutterer for, wait, stuttering (yes, that’s right), or the romantic interest who is all set to compete for the most vapid, vacuous female character (Ananya Panday) in recent times, or a mother who roars louder than her son? It boggles the mind that filmmakers still think today’s audiences are willing to swallow utter rubbish in the name of entertainment. Where do they live? Also read | Don’t get me wrong. There’s nothing more pleasurable than a masala movie done right. But there’s nothing new or fresh about the ingredients that go into the making of this film: mixed martial arts, snarling boxers, tough-as-nail trainers, and the hero who will pulp everyone single-handedly has been around of years. for years. This excuse-for-a-plot is filled with all kinds of outlandish situations; the treatment is beyond pathetic. The insensitive poking-fun-at-the-guy who stutters is downright distasteful (at one time he’s called a ‘stammering buffoon’ in the English subtitle), and the creation of the leading lady is not just a sexist misfire, it is posi...

Liger Movie Review: Due to a bizarre narrative and poor writing LIGER fails to impress.

Liger Review & Review Rating LIGERis the story of a born fighter. Liger ( Vijay Deverakonda) shifts to Mumbai with his mother Balamani (Ramya Krishnan) from Banaras and both start running a tea stall. However, their real intent in shifting to the city is to meet Christopher (Ronit Roy). He runs a Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) training centre. Balamani requests Christopher to train Liger, that too for free. Christopher rejects the demand at first. But Balamani reminds him that Liger is the son of Lion Balram, a famous fighter who had defeated Christopher in 2004 and who later died. She also insists that since she is unable to afford his fees, Christopher can hire Liger as his servant. Christopher agrees but under two conditions – firstly, Liger should not lose focus, and secondly, he should not run behind women. Liger agrees. Christopher soon realizes that Liger is an expert fighter and can fulfil his father’s wish of winning the national championship. However, Liger bumps into Taniya ( Puri Jagannadh's story (co-written by Karan Thatavarthy, A R Sreedhar) is clichéd. There have been many such underdog sports films in the past and LIGER offers nothing new in this regard. Puri Jagannadh's screenplay is intended to be massy and commercial. A few scenes here and there are well thought out. But overall, the film is peppered with very silly moments, and the writing nosedives in the second half. Prashant Pandey's Hindi dialogues are okay. Puri Jagannadh's direction is not up to the m...

‘Liger’ movie review: This Puri Jagannadh film starring Vijay Deverakonda is a mess

In the opening minutes of Liger, a voiceover describes the title character as a slumdog from the streets of Mumbai who is aiming to win on an international podium. Though overused, this underdog template can still make the cut if a writer-director has a story that stays true to its milieu and engages the audience. Liger, helmed by Puri Jagannadh and headlined by Vijay Deverakonda, however, comes across as a lazily written film that moves from one song/stunt sequence to another. Liger (Vijay Deverakonda), whom his mother Balamani (Ramya Krishnan) describes as a crossbreed between a lion and tiger, is good at mixed martial arts (MMA). Hailing from Karimnagar and raising him on her own, she has moved to Mumbai to see him as an MMA national champion; the mother and son make ends meet by managing a tea stall. They seek the help of a coach (Ronit Roy), though they cannot afford the fee. Balamani is a feisty character who does not bow down; she reveals an emotional story that cuts the ice with the coach. Puri gives Liger a handicap — a stutter. He can land several punches in the time he strings together a sentence. Predictable scenes follow in which Liger is ridiculed by the students of MMA and he has to fight to earn their respect. Liger Cast: Vijay Deverakonda, Ananya Panday, Ramya Krishnan Director: Puri Jagannadh Language: Telugu and Hindi, dubbed in Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam Once Liger’s potential in MMA is established, the story introduces the leading lady who is charact...
