In a first, Andhra government to introduce LKG, UKG in all state schools

If YSR Congress party president and Andhra Pradesh chief minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy has his way, all the government schools in the state are going to introduce pre-primary classes – Lower Kinder Garten (LKG) and Upper Kinder Garten (UKG) from the next academic year. Hitherto, the preparatory courses like Nursery and pre-primary classes like LKG and UKG are being run only in private English medium schools, while all the government schools have classes from Class 1 to 10 only in Telugu medium. “We have not yet taken a final decision. The proposal is still in the discussion stage,” B Rajasekhar, Secretary of School Education of Andhra Pradesh, said, without elaborating further. However, an official in the department familiar with the development said the chief minister had instructed the department to work out to introduce pre-primary classes like LKG and UKG in the government schools, since they are being converted into English medium in a phased manner. The pre-primary classes would be started in 3,400-odd government schools under Samagra Siksha Abhiyan scheme of the Centre. Priority would be given to the children of the tribal and backward areas. TIRUCHI Heads of government primary and upper primary schools in the region are understood to be contemplating adoption of resolutions under the aegis of School Management Committees to seek government nod for conducting LKG and UKG classes. The School Education Department presently permits only those schools where anganwadis are functioning under Integrated Child Development Scheme, to conduct the pre-primary classes. However, there are growing instances of parents in rural parts urging the government schools that do not have anganwadi centres to conduct LKG and UKG classes, according to the department sources. In a recent communication to government schools where anganwadis are functioning, the School Education Department had instructed the headmasters/ headmistresses to conduct the admissions with the ICDS staff, and to carry out the teaching learning also with the same manpower until special teachers are appointed. The school heads have also been advised to upload particulars of the children admitted to the pre-primary classes in EMIS (Educational Management Information System) database. According to a school head in the city that does not have an anganwadi, all the government needs to do is to grant permission for conducting pre-primary classes. By Express News Service COIMBATORE: The district school education department has directed the HMs of Panchayat Union Middle Schools (PUMS) across the district to conduct admission awareness campaign and increase strength of students. This comes a day after the State government released instructions about the functioning of LKG and UKG classes on Thursday. A district educational officer, on condition of anonymity, said, “As many as 122 UKG and LKG classes are functioning in the government schools across the district. However, the classes were suspended due to Covid-19 and did not restart after that. Now, parents are reluctant to send their children to these government schools due to this gap in reopening and other issues like lack of teachers and amenities. Also, following the confusion in restarting the classes, many parents have already admitted their children to nearby private play schools.” Now, the headmasters of that schools are asked to conduct an awareness campaign in their locality to attract students to the LKG and UKG classes. Further, they have also asked to do spot admission if the habitation has students above three and four, who are not attending schools, he added. Highlights • Tamil Nadu's school education minister, Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi, said on Thursday that LKG and UKG classes in these schools would be maintained with special teachers. • Due to a shortage of teachers, surplus teachers who were teaching LKG and UKG classes were recently relocated to primary schools. Following public outcry over the plan to close kindergarten divisions in 2,381 government schools, Tamil Nadu's school education minister, Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi, said on Thursday that LKG and UKG classes in these schools would be maintained with special teachers. The state administration had been encouraged by political parties and educationists to keep the KG sections in these government institutions. The minister said in a statement that the previous administration used excess instructors to teach LKG and UKG classes due to a drop in enrolment in government institutions. Following last year's transfer of seven lakh children from private to public schools, the school education department added 3,000 new sections.
